CONFERENCE FROM MOR ÇATI: “Women are not fragile, they are made fragile”

Organized online between 09-10 October 2021 “Feminist Approaches to Social Work in Combating Male Violence – World Experiences” The first day of the international conference titled has been completed.

The first speech of the conference, also the rapporteur of the Istanbul Convention monitoring committee (GREVIO), one of those who prepared the Turkey evaluation report , from the Vienna Center for Intervention Against Domestic Violence Rosa Logar. In her speech, Rosa Logar underlined that “Women and girls are not born fragile, but they are made fragile” and underlined that male violence emerges as a result of the male-dominated system and affects every woman who receives and gives support without discrimination.

Women should realize their power

Feminist Approaches to Social Work her name is on the first panel from England , Liz Kelly, Germany Britta Schlichting and Purple Acelya Uçan gave a speech from Roof . In her speech, Liz Kelly said that violence causes women to lose control over their own lives, and that the feminist approach to social work is aimed at redefining control and enlarging the narrowed spaces.

Britta Schlichting emphasized the importance of conducting shelter work independently of any patriarchal institution and making women aware of their own strength in this work. Açelya Uçan said that the increasing contradiction between laws and practices in Turkey stems from policies that do not see women as individuals outside the family, and that in order to combat this, it is necessary to insist on feminist social work that encourages women to make their own decisions, and which is based on solidarity between the support recipient and the giver.

Coordination Practices in Combating Violence Against Women In the second panel, Marcella Pirrone from Italy , Ghada Hatem and Jessica Spraos from France and Catriona Grant from Scotland made a presentation. In her speech, Marcella Pirrone explained the examples of the multi-institutional approach defined in the Istanbul Convention in practice in Italy and said that establishing corporate networks, not individuals, is effective in fulfilling the responsibilities of the authorities.

Ghada Hatem and Jessica Spraos underlined that it is challenging for women who have been subjected to violence to apply to more than one institution and the importance of a work involving coordination among many institutions. Catriona Grant, in her speech on the direct impact of domestic violence on children, emphasized the support that should be given to children together with women in the fight against violence.

On the second day

The second day of the conference will continue with workshops. Different Needs, Different Applications from Sweden Jenny Westerstrand, Germany Ceyda Keskin and from England Şenay Dur, Mechanisms to Combat Sexual Violence from Hungary Eniko Pap and Ireland Cliona Saidlear from , and Tamar Çitak from Austria in the workshop Alternative Experiences in Combating Male Violence and USA Angela Mcgraw will share their experiences.

Mor Roof Women’s Shelter Foundation was founded by feminists in 1990 to combat violence against women. and women live in free and equal conditions and lead a life away from gender-based discrimination and male violence.
