Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that his country’s response could be “varied” if the US and the West refused to provide Moscow with a security guarantee. He assured that obtaining these guarantees is the only goal Russia is pursuing.
In the event of a refusal, the answer from Russia “may vary” and “will depend on the proposals that our military experts present,” Putin said in an interview with state television Rossiya 1.
“Our suggestions for security guarantees are explicit and clear,” he said. He assured that Russia had “only one goal” in this matter, namely “to bring about agreements that would ensure – both today and in the long term – the security of Russia and its citizens”.
He also stated that Moscow was concerned that the West would use its proposals in order to initiate “destructive actions” to “create threats” for Russia “in the territory of neighboring countries”.
“They will keep talking, talking endlessly about the necessity talks, but they will do nothing except filling the neighboring country with modern weapon systems and reinforcing the threat to the Russian Federation, “Putin said.
For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday that “the issue of security guarantees, especially the issue of enlarging the Atlantic Alliance to the former USSR countries, including Ukraine, is actually a matter of life and death” for Russia. (PAP)
