Podcast: Delta Hepatitis Type

Contagious Discourse

Contagious Discourse, a new series of podcasts for the Israeli medical community, presented by D. Hila Korach. Chapter 4: Dr. Hazan Ravi, Director of the Liver Clinic in the Northern District, Clalit Health Services. In collaboration with Giliad

In the world there are between 48-60 million people who have been infected with Delta hepatitis, HDV. The hepatitis Delta virus, which requires the presence of the hepatitis B virus in order to infect – the virus is unable to physically penetrate into the cells due to a lack of specific envelope proteins which cling to appropriate receptors in the body’s cells. The virus uses HBV envelopes to bind to these receptors and enter cells – only those who are infected with HBV can also be infected with HDV.

It is possible to be infected with HDV simultaneously with HBV ( co-infection), or to be infected with HDV after there has already been an early infection with HBV (superinfection). The timing of infection affects the severity of the disease. The prevailing estimate today is that 4.5-13% of HBV carriers are also infected with HDV, while in Israel it is about 6.5%.

Dr. Hazan Ravi, director of the Liver Clinic in the Northern District , Clalit Health Services, discussed the topic with Dr. Hila Korach in a new episode of Contagious Discourse, Episode 4 in a special series of podcasts on the world of infections in collaboration with Gilead.

Have a nice listen!
