Tennis Australia is out leaders of the guilty.
History Novak Djokovic and his tragic entry into Australia is getting a little less confusing. Or even more confusing.
After the Serb visa was canceled, it was reported that the Australian border service was reviewing the cases of two more people who entered the country based on medication received with the participation of Tennis Australia, the local tennis federation.
On Friday, Australian media reported that the world’s 81st racket couple Renata Vorachova – who arrived in Melbourne back in December and has already held one tournament – was detained, sent to the same hotel where Djokovic is now, and is being prepared for deportation. And The Age found out that the third person with problems is not a player, but a judge (he had already left Australia himself).
And now a picture is being drawn in which the main culprit of the sad epic is Tennis Australia.
Unvaccinated people need a medical lead to work in the tournament. And it is needed on two levels. First, to cross the border of the country – and here it is controlled by the federal authorities. Secondly, to get into the territory of the Australian Open – here the authorities of Victoria and Tennis Australia are responsible for control.
As it turned out, Tennis Australia made a serious a mistake when informing players about their prospects at the federal level. On December 7, the organization sent a letter to the players in which it informed that a medical exception can be obtained if after July 31 there was a transferred and documented coronavirus.
This information is now claimed to be incorrect. In the Australian media, photographs of a letter to the head of the organization and part-time director of the Australian Open, Craig Tiley, appeared – in it, the Minister of Health of Australia says that for the federal authorities the transferred covid does not give the right to medical removal. On the letter, the date is November 29.
Tennis Australia reported in January that there were 26 people who had applied for a medical withdrawal – most of them as times because of the transferred covid (not all received it). It seems that Djokovic also tried to enter the country with just such an argument. And ABC News reports that at the border he provided documents on Tennis Australia letterhead and signed by the head of the organization’s medical services.
this story, said that Djokovic, in addition to a paper from Tennis Australia, had only one doctor’s certificate, while Vorrachova and the judge also had a bunch of tests that they took in the course of illness, as well as certificates from 3-4 specialists).
Formally, exceptions were issued with the participation of the government of Victoria, but Jacinta Allan, who was performing his duties during the prime minister’s vacation, hinted, that Tennis Australia was in charge of the process. When reports of takedown problems began to surface, she said Tennis Australia had failed to notify the state that the feds did not recognize the recent covid as sufficient reason.
The organization now denies everything: “We have always conveyed to our players that vaccination is the best solution. Not only does it protect yourself and others, but it is also the best way to enter Australia.
We deny that we have deliberately misinformed the players. We provided information on medical exceptions from the site that Greg Hunt directed us to. ”
The application contains a link to the site, and the journalists followed it … Now there is nothing about the previously transferred covid – but, perhaps, it used to be.
This story creates new questions.
• Why was Vorahova initially allowed into the country if her documents were as incorrect as that of Djokovic?
• Would you deport her if it weren’t for the noisy Serb case?
• Why
• How does it fit in that the biosafety manager responsible for protocols resigned from Tennis Australia at the end of December on the fight against covid, including for contacts with the authorities?
• And most importantly – how will the error that has surfaced by Tennis Australia affect the course of Djokovic’s appeal? Will it help him in court that he can now shift responsibility (although he will remain unvaccinated and will not meet the criteria for a medical removal)?
Probably, we will receive some of the answers on Monday, when the Serb appeal hearing will take place.
Djokovic’s deportation is a story in which everyone looks bad: Novak himself, Australian tennis and power of all stripes
