Pixar’s “Turning Red” Now Direct-To-Disney+

After sending their last two films (“Soul,” “Luca”) direct to the Disney+ service, Disney pledged a few months back that Pixar’s next film would come to theaters.

Now though, the highly contagious omicron variant of COVID-19 has led to the Mouse House to scrap those plans. Instead, the film will launch exclusively on Disney+ on March 11th.

Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution made the announcement today saying “given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions.”

“Turning Red” will be released theatrically in international markets where Disney+ is not yet available, with premiere dates to be announced.

The film follows Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying a dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Also whenever she gets too excited, she turns into a giant red panda.
