The decision that Nemi El-Hassan will not moderate the program “Quarks” was made on Tuesday by the WDR director Tom Buhrow made public. In his opinion, the problem is not so much her participation in an Al-Kuds demonstration seven years ago, as she clearly distanced herself from it, he told the «FAZ» . However, problematic likes from her have recently appeared on social networks. In any case, sticking to the presenter would lead to an inappropriate politicization of the program.
According to Buhrow, El-Hassan will be deposed as moderator. However, the WDR is considering letting the journalist work as an author for “Quarks”, he said.
Nemi El-Hassan should have moderated the science program “Quarks” together with another doctor from October. Shortly after this became known, videos and photos were circulating on Twitter that were supposed to prove that El-Hassan was an Islamist and an anti-Semite. Specifically, she was accused of participating in the Al-Kuds demonstration in Berlin in 2014. In the past, anti-Semitic slogans were repeatedly shouted at Al-Kuds marches and symbols of the Hezbollah movement were shown.
After the allegations became known, El-Hassan explicitly distanced himself in a personal statement and described participation in the demonstration as a mistake. “I condemn any anti-Semitic statements and actions,” it said in the statement. At the same time, a video by El-Hassan from 2015 appeared in which she spoke of her jihad. In addition, this May she called Palestine her “home” on Twitter and portrayed Israel as the aggressor. “We will never forget”, says the multi-part entry.
