This season’s Asian Champions League, a competition in which Al-Hilal, coached by Leonardo Jardim, defends the title, will only have a winner in 2023, after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) decided to extend the main competition for clubs on that continent.
The justification for the division of games between 2022 and 2023 is due, not only to the constraints on travel caused by the covid-19 pandemic, but also to the fact that the World Cup in Qatar will take place between November and December 2022.
A scenario that led the AFC to propose that the East region, with teams from Australia, China, Japan or South Korea South, have a finalist in August this year, while for teams from Qatar, Saudi Arabia or Iran, the knockout stage will only take place in February 2023, with round of 16, quarter-final and semi-final.
The proposal for the competition, whose draw will be on Monday, will still have to be approved by the executive committee of the AFC and predicts that the two-legged final will take place on February 19 and 26, 2023.
