Capital hotels did not reach pre-pandemic occupancy levels in 2021

The Mexico City closed 2021 with a hotel occupancy of 30%, which meant that the targets could not be reached. same levels that occurred between 2017 and 2019, pre-pandemic years, revealed the Hotel Association of Mexico City.

According to the annual report of the business group, the capital of the country during 2020, the year in which the health contingency began due to Covid-19, reached a hotel occupancy of 19.82%, while in 2019 this was 67.89%, in 2018 the levels were 69.25% and in 2017 it rose to 68.48 percent.

Hotel entrepreneurs project that by 2022 the hotel occupancy continue with constant growth, but at the same rate as in 2021; the same percentage of pre-pandemic levels would be recovering until 2023.

“It is worth mentioning that this estimate may be affected as a result of upcoming events in the city such as the 2023 Tourist Tianguis, Formula 1, RIOT Games, among other activities”, they reiterated.

Hoteliers in the capital indicated that the hotel rate recovery could take up to five years to recover.

Precisely, the estimate reveals that the initial period of recovery it is estimated that it will arrive for the period of 2024–2025.

The report of the Association of Hotels of Mexico City indicated that in 2021 the average rate was 1,179.77 pesos, while in 2020 it was 1,086.70 pesos, for in the In 2019 it was 1,890.68 pesos.

In 2018 the hotel rate amounted to 2,066.36 pesos and in 2017 it was 1,909.23 pesos.

Last quarter of 2021

The last quarter of 2021 was the one that showed the best numbers with occupancies of 41.39% in October, 52.73% in November and 45.68% in December.

“The month of December 2021 also showed a slight drop in hotel occupancy in Mexico City compared to tion to the month of November 2021, however, said change does not represent a significant drop because the occupational difference is a direct effect as a result of the cultural and sporting events that were shown during November”, pointed out the Hotel Association of the capital. of the country.

Concern

Given the increase in infections and the arrival of the variant Ómicron of Covid-19 to the country, the Association of Hotels of Mexico City reported that it is not a good time for the closure of commercial establishments, hotels and restaurants, since the recovery of the economy is on the right track and it would not support a new fall or cessation of activities.

“We must not let our guard down, as providers of tourist services, but also as guests and diners, we must comply with all safety and hygiene measures with which to protect We maintain the health of tourists and collaborators, without harming the economic reactivation,” they maintained.

The hoteliers announced that they will work in coordination with the Ministry of Economic Development (Sedeco) to continue promoting the process of economic recovery in Mexico City and thereby continue to preserve jobs.

At the same time, they reiterated their support for the Government of the City of Mexico to reinforce the current vaccination plan and the application of tests.

“The Hotel Association of Mexico City reaffirms the commitment of the sector to implement the Hygiene and Safety Protocols in its establishments, promoting the Safe Travel Seal and caring for the integrity of collaborators and tourists”, they elaborated.
