Although I’m familiar with the Final Fantasy series, of course, I can consider myself a rookie. I spent the most time in the MMORPG iteration – Final Fantasy XIV, which, however, deviates significantly from the experienced standards of the much-loved Japanese work. The JRPG genre emphasizes elaborate stories in worlds that have immersive magic, and you will often wonder where the creators go for those ideas. The original Final Fantasy VII, released in 1997, was like a bolt from the blue. At that time, it was at the forefront both in terms of technology and in terms of scenario. That’s why this episode is considered by many to be the best in the series. When the remake ( review PS4 version) was released on April 10, 2020, the dream of many long-time fans came true. The title received very positive reviews, but there were also those who were disappointed. Mainly due to the division of the story into several parts and interventions in the original story. In December, more than a year and a half after its release on PlayStation 4, the game also hit computer screens, so many newcomers can venture into the winding streets of Midgar. Cities that never sleep

Avalanche vs. Shinra
The protagonist is Cloud Strife – a former elite soldier who worked for Shinra Corporation. With the help of its power plants and their reactors, it mines Mako – the life energy of the planet Gaia, on which the city of Midgar is located (not to be confused with Midgard in God of War). Thanks to Mak, Shinra rules Midgar with a technological fist, which he is constantly strengthening with new inventions. As a soldier, Cloud really went through what, so after losing his naive ideas about the company he fights for, he joins his childhood friend Tifa Lockhart, who works with the eco-terrorist group Avalanche (Greta approves). Here he catches himself as a mercenary. Apart from Cloud and Tifa, the group of determined fighters for a better future includes roughman Barret Wallace, Biggs, fat Wedge and Jessie Raspberry. Later, another character will be added (theoretically two), but I won’t tell you that, I would disturb the impression of the story. The campaign against Shinra Corporation can begin.
The main character is Cloud Strife
The plot of the game focuses mainly on the streets of Midgar and the interior of the Shinra power plants. Forget about trips to the surrounding world like in Final Fantasy XV. But Midgar looked unbelievably good to me. Industrial architecture is interwoven with magic in a very good proportion and the vertical layout of the city is a great design decision. More than once I stopped to enjoy the view from the slums at the very bottom, where the next levels of the metropolis rise at dizzying heights. However, I had a problem with the overall clarity of the story and in the later stages of its recombination. I often lost the thread. Flashbacks helped a bit, but I would still appreciate the simpler form. However, I don’t think it will be a problem for the old fans of the series. Maybe they’re talking about remakes and adjustments. Outside the main storyline, the game offers a lot of side quests with its own plots. Players who like to explore every nook and cranny can look forward to more than fifty hours of content. The remake also includes an additional extension of the story – INTERmission review PS5 version), which you should definitely play along the main line. DLC takes about seven hours.
Spectacular fights
Fighting in the remake of Final Fantasy VII is simply great. Unlike the original, where the fights were on a turn-based basis, you can now fully engage. The reward is action carving with effects that seem to fall out of the anime classic. Don’t worry, you’re still giving orders to your team members, but it’s all faster, more action-packed, and more interactive. But if you have stuck to the duel format from the original Sedmičky, then the creators offer the so-called Classic mode. In it, fights take place automatically and you only give commands to individual characters. However, on higher difficulty, this is somewhat problematic. The characters often react stubbornly and slowly, so I would recommend the classic mode only for the easy variant. I definitely have to highlight the boss fights, of which there are really plenty across the game. This is a spectacular spectacle, accompanied by great music and you will often sweat on higher difficulty.
U
Especially at higher levels of difficulty, you will make extensive use of matter. Magic stones that have various abilities. I see a big plus in the possibility of equipping the characters with any combination of materials, thanks to which you can adapt each team member to your preferences. Cloud can suddenly become a healer or a fire mage. In addition to adjusting abilities and improving them, emphasis is also placed on character equipment. And in the form of weapons and armor. You level weapons by using them and then unlock talents with the help of skill points. RPG elements are solid and the variability of builds will definitely not offend. The chapter itself then consists of so-called summons. After recharging the pointer, you can call the entity that comes to your aid. For example, such an Ifrit can unleash fiery visual throws on the screen.
As I am not very forged in the JRPG genre, please take the following paragraphs with caution. These are purely subjective impressions. A third of the game time consists of cutscenes and movies. That wouldn’t be such a problem, but the dialogues are sometimes terrible, infantile and embarrassing. Yes, I know this form of expression, for example, from Asian film and series production, but in the remake of Final Fantasy VII, it is something completely disturbing and annoying to me. Constant heckling of the main characters, failed jokes, overshot gestures and grimaces. It’s all too often in the game, and it definitely ruined my impression of the story.
The dialogues are
But I can’t say that there is no chemistry between the characters, I would lie to you. For example, such a relationship between Cloud and Tif has a solid foundation, but it is probably Tif. Because Tifa is really a piece. I have no complaints about the characters of Cloud and Biggs, but the wannabe tough Barret, the insatiable Wedge and the fighter Jessie really didn’t suit me. But even they do not reach for the ankles of Rochem and his bits on the motorcycle. Oh god, for what… For matadors of the JRPG genre it will probably not be an obstacle and they are used to it, but you, who are more of a novice, will have many astonished glances towards the screen. Yes, I’m talking about a dance club scene. Brrr.
Technical paskvil
Did the port on the PC work? No. Absolutely no. This is a completely sloppy job and I personally consider the sale price, which is set at more than CZK 2,100 as impudence. Instead of playing, I spent the first few hours editing and configuring the game files to make the game look and play at least decent. Although the remake looks very nice and is not demanding on hardware, there is often so-called stuttering – jamming and declines in the use of the graphics card (especially in more open locations). All of this is dominated by dynamic resolution, which cannot be turned off in the menu. It is camouflaged beyond the frame rate per second, which is divided into 30 to 120. The higher the fps limit, the more blurred the image will be. The game tries to stick to the value you have chosen at all costs. You can work around this by downloading the mode and then editing the files in Notepad. As soon as I increased the fps limit this way and turned off the dynamic resolution, the game looked and was played much better. Furthermore, I had to change the used version of DirectX directly in the Epic Games launcher to eliminate the mentioned jamming as much as possible.
This is a completely sloppy PC port.
The fact that the settings offer only two quality types – low and high. In 2021, I would expect the developers to serve us somewhat more extensive options. Especially with the much-anticipated game that Final Fantasy undoubtedly is. Catastrophic is also the control on the keyboard, which clearly borders on madness. Unintuitive, complicated and pointless. This game was made on drivers and if you have no compatible, hell awaits you in the form of intertwined limbs. But that’s not the end of it. Even the connection of the Xbox driver did not go without complications. The game does not recognize the driver and you must click through several screens to activate it. As the input device, the game constantly chose a joystick that I didn’t even have turned on. From a technical point of view, this is a solid mess. Shame. Especially for the price.
A clear choice for fans, a risk for newcomers I know the last two chapters of the review are hard, but I can tell you that absolutely honest. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is definitely not a bad game. But the PC version is a very bad port. One of the worst I’ve ever played. Without file modifications, you will suffer in the form of dynamic resolution and stuttering, even on very strong reports. Keyboard controls are torture rather than gaming. For those who played and loved the original, this is probably a duty, but in some places it will be accompanied by the bitterness of interfering with the original game. Newcomers take risks. If you are bothered by the behavior of characters typical of Japanese games, movies and series, then avoid the game by arc. If you like the JRPG genre and you’re used to it, go for it. The reward will be a great combat system, beautiful Midgar aesthetics, a solid story and Tifa. But I definitely don’t break a stick over Sedmička. Perhaps we will soon see the continuation of a story that has rightly won the hearts of millions of players. But you better play the first part on PlayStation. The set price tag definitely does not suit the “qualities” of the PC port. Škoda.
