Copa del Rey: Betis-Sevilla derby suspended after tube hits player

The derby between Betis and Sevilla, for the round of 16 of the Spanish King’s Cup, was interrupted and then officially suspended on Saturday night, after about 40 minutes of play, after Joan Jordán, Sevilla player, was hit by a tube that came from the stands.

It all happened after Nabil Fekir made it 1-1 on the scoreboard. Betis celebrated and Jordán was hit by the object. Immediately, some confusion arose, with many protests from elements of the Sevilla team, while the 27-year-old midfielder was being assisted, with complaints in his head. Apparently, the tube through which he was hit is light, but it was enough to leave the Spanish athlete to file complaints, as a result of the impact.

After about half an hour of expectation, in a note official, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed at 21:52 (22:52 local time) that the match was suspended. «The game of the knockout round of the Copa del Rey between Betis and Seville is suspended. The RFEF condemns any act of violence on the field of play”, says the organization, through the social network Twitter.

Following the throwing of the tube and the stoppage in the game, the Sevilla team returned to the changing rooms after a few minutes. This happened after the referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea had sent everything in that direction. Most of the elements that were still on the pitch waiting for a decision were from the Betis team, at the same time that the security cordon was reinforced next to the Betis cheerleaders, on the bench of the Benito Villamarín stadium.

Betis players, among them the Portuguese William Carvalho and Rui Silva, who started the match, were on the bench until the official decision announced by the RFEF, which led to the players of the host team finally giving a sign of farewell, with applause for the stands.

As for the history of the scorer in the approximately 40 minutes that were played this Saturday, Papu Gómez advanced Sevilla in the 35th minute and, in the 39th, Nabil Fekir made a goal from a direct corner, before the moment that dictated the suspension of the Andalusian derby.

Reminding Juande Ramos 2007

The limits crossed in the derbies between Betis and Seville met another sad episode on Saturday night and reminds us of what the happened in 2007, on the same stage, when the then coach of Sevilla, Juande Ramos, was hit by a bottle full of plastic, which left him unconscious and even led to a trip to the hospital.
