Comment: Scholz speaks of unity in the course of the pandemic – but it is missing on central issues

Country leaders torpedo decisions that they themselves helped negotiate before they are officially announced. How, then, should those whom they concern be convinced?

That sounds good, because what’s the point of these corona summits if in the end everyone does what they want anyway? At meetings during the first three waves, country leaders torpedoed the decisions in their own statements , even before they were announced. Ironically, before the towering omicron wave this is the case again.

Shortly after the end of the video switch, Saxony-Anhalt’s state boss Reiner Haseloff (CDU) said that he did not want to implement the 2G plus rule that had been decided in restaurants, bars and cafes. Bayern also stated that they wanted to carefully examine the rule first.

The same applies to the general obligation to vaccinate: Scholz explained that all 16 federal states are in favor of it. This must now be discussed quickly in the Bundestag. At the same time, however, his traffic light coalition has so far disagreed on the issue, especially the FDP is mobilizing with an application against compulsory vaccination, the end is open.

Unity is not an end in itself The pandemic politicians also do not agree on the question of whether the epidemic situation must be determined again. This would make extensive closures of shops and schools possible. The question apparently splits the heads of countries. Unity is not an end in itself, it is an important signal to the population and the economy. If not even those in government are convinced of the measures for which they are responsible – how can it be those who have to support them decisively? The frustration and anger among those affected are already great. Retail or the catering industry fear for theirs because of the 2G or 2G-plus rule Existence – despite the Corona aid. At the same time, for some experts, the measures taken do not go far enough. They would like to close parts of the economy again to protect the health system. The governing policy must include both camps – and must not fall into camps themselves. Otherwise you get the impression that the measures are arbitrary and that there is no uniform strategy.
