Forget smartphones, cameras, and the PlayStation 5. Sony is building electric vehicles next. In 2020, Sony surprised many when it teased the Vision-S concept EV, showing just how serious it is about electric cars. Then, at CES 2022, the company kicked things into high gear and announced Sony Mobility.

Sony Mobility is the company’s new automotive division, and to remind us that it’s making EVs, Sony just debuted its beautiful new Vision-S 02 concept SUV. And honestly, it looks pretty great.

The Vision-S 02 prototype combines many of Sony’s imaging and sensor technologies, developments in AI, telecommunication, and more, to create an electric vehicle that could soon rival Tesla. Just like the model shown off two years ago, the Vision-S 02 SUV packs in over 30+ sensors for autonomous driving, an extensive infotainment setup with triple displays across the entire front dash, screens in the back, a glass panorama roof, and several other exciting features.

And while Sony didn’t share a ton of specs, we have a few details along with the teaser images and video below.

Before you think that this is just a concept like the 2020 sedan, Sony actually started test-driving the original Vision-S on European roads last year. So basically, the company is pretty serious about electric vehicles, and this latest SUV concept could soon become a reality.

The overall size and shape looks quite similar to Tesla’s Model Y, but things could change if this ever goes into production.

During the announcement, Sony did state the new Vision-S 02 SUV runs on two electric motors capable of a combined 536 horsepower. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any information about battery sizes, charging speeds, or an estimated driving range. However, the original sedan from 2020 reportedly went from 0-62 MPH in 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 149 MPH, with two similar electric motors.

In closing, Sony’s chairman, president, and CEO said, “We are exploring a commercial launch of Sony’s EV and how a creative entertainment company can redefine mobility.”

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not we’ll be able to drive or own a Sony EV someday, but things are certainly moving in that direction.

Astronomers point at black holes for dark energy ejection

Astronomers at the University of Michigan could have found evidence linking dark energy—a mysterious energy that drives the exponential expansion of the universe—with black holes. Researchers used measurements by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) to theorize that dark energy is sourced from black hole production. Despite making up almost 70% of the universe, we
