The Recanto do Espírito Santo School, institution Catholic Christian private school, in Itaúna, in the Midwest of Minas Gerais, released, last January 12, a “communication” that warned parents and guardians about school materials that carry what was considered as “anti-family ideologies” .
The text, which deals with images used in material by students at school, such as unicorns, skulls, gay pride and the face of communist revolutionary leader Ernesto Che Guevara, went viral on social media.
“The prints on the objects that we use also say a lot about what we live and believe,” reads the school’s statement. “In fact, fashion is a strong instrument for identifying groups. Have you ever thought that the choice of school items is also part of children’s training? Before choosing, ask yourself a few questions: What is the meaning of this print? What does it represent for my children?”.
The school identifies in the “notebooks and t-shirts with skulls” an apology of the culture of death. The hammer and sickle emblem, and the face of Che Guevara, “the great assassin and communist revolutionary, have been in fashion for decades”, continues the text, which is signed by the school’s management.
The college also states that the unicorn – which is “always presented as a sweet and charming figure” – has a “danger” in its representation. The board alleges that it is the folk animal that is used to “identify someone of non-binary gender”. “In other words, he doesn’t fit into anything and lives totally without standards. In short, it is another symbol contrary to natural law, contrary to God’s plans.”
The school mentions Shake Unicorn, dessert launched by the Burger King restaurant chain in celebration of the gay parade day, in support of its interpretation of the symbol.
The announcement identifies some new risks. The rainbow, a symbol of God’s covenant with Noah, “was kidnapped by LGBT militancy”, as well as the unicorn, dangerous for representing non-binary people, someone who “does not fit into anything and lives totally without standards. In short, it is yet another symbol contrary to natural law, contrary to God’s plans.”
The school’s statement generated negative and favorable comments on social networks.
