The tourism boom experienced by the Seychelles in the Pacific Ocean led to a surge in the Republic’s local currency, and its performance this year surpassed that of the rest of the world’s currencies. The Seychelles rupee strengthened 2.9% this week to 13.31 rupees to the dollar, and so far this year has added 60% to its value – making it the best-performing currency in a basket of 146 currencies in the world, followed by the Bloomberg network. The Seychelles became one of the most vaccinated countries in the world this year, after rushing to vaccinate its 99,000 inhabitants against the Corona virus, with the aim of reviving the tourism industry – the mainstay of the Seychelles economy.
