After the anti-Lai pig referendum failed at the end of last year, the outside world is mostly optimistic that the opening of food imports in the five counties of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan is also imperative. The Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation released the latest poll on the 25th. Although only 39% support and 55% disapprove, the supporters have reached a new high since the survey in 2016, and the opposition has reached a new low; There are still 47% who are not confident, but 48% who are confident. Those who are not confident also hit a new low since the three surveys, and the proportion who are confident hit a new high.

You Yinglong’s analysis shows that if the Cai government recently opened up the import of food, although it would encounter opposition from more than half of the public, it would have weakened a lot compared to when it opened up the US pig. Comparing the results of the past three surveys, only 19.2% supported the survey in November 2016, it rose to 28.3% in September 2020, and has now risen to 38.8%; for the opposition, it dropped from 76.3% in 2016 to 2020 In September 2009, it was 65.5%, and now it has been reduced to 54.6%. The strength of opposition has been shrinking in the past five years.

Regarding the reasons for the change in the attitude of the Chinese people, You Yinglong believes that there are three possible reasons. First, when the epidemic broke out in Taiwan last May and there was a serious shortage of vaccines, Japan successively assisted more than 4 million doses of AZ vaccine; second, the recent three Japanese cabinets have all been strongly concerned about the situation in the Taiwan Strait, and publicly and concretely expressed that they would not sit idly by “things happen in Taiwan”. Polls also show that more than half of the people believe that when China invades our country, Japan will send troops to help defend Taiwan; third, last year’s anti-Lai pig referendum, the Tsai government put forward a new and more complete statement, linking the import of US pigs to the international market. Trade and Taiwan-US relations, rather than being limited to food security issues, have changed the Taiwanese people’s imagination of similar issues to a considerable extent.
As for the Chinese people to maintain food safety for the Cai government The survey shows that 48% have confidence and 47% have no confidence. However, comparing the past three surveys, those who are confident have risen from 28% in the 2016 survey to 47.8% today, and those who are not confident have also dropped from 66.9% in the 2016 survey to 47.1% today. You Yinglong believes that the reason may be that in 2016, the Tsai government fell into the first ruling predicament at the beginning of his administration, which is completely different from the time and space environment after re-election in 2020 .
