Apple ปล่อยตัวเบต้าแรกของระบบปฏิบัติการ iOS 15.4 ที่เพิ่มฟีเจอร์ใหม่ อนุญาตให้ผู้ใช้สามารถปลดล็อคเครื่องด้วย Face ID ได้ ทั้งที่ยังสวมหน้ากากอยู่ และไม่ต้องใช้ Apple Watch เพื่อยืนยันตัวตน
Apple กล่าวว่าฟีเจอร์ตัวใหม่นี้จะสามารถจดจำคุณลักษณะของผู้ใช้เฉพาะบริเวณรอบดวงตาเพื่อความถูกต้องในการยืนยันตัวตน
หากผู้ใช้เลือกใช้งานฟีเจอร์นี้ คุณจะต้องทำการสแกนใบหน้าของคุณใหม่อีกครั้งเพื่อปลดล็อคใบหน้าด้วย Face ID แบบใส่แมส จากนั้นเมื่อสแกนสำเร็จแล้ว ผู้ใช้จะสามารถปลดล็อคเครื่อง iPhone ด้วย Face ID ได้แม้ในขณะสวมแมสอยู่
ในส่วนของการตั้งค่า จะมีตัวเลือก “Use Face ID with a Mask” ให้เปิด-ปิดการใช้งานได้ นอกจากนี้ยังมีฟีเจอร์ใหม่เพิ่มเติมอย่าง “Add Glasses” ใหม่ให้ผู้ใช้ใส่แว่นตาเพิ่มเข้าไปเพื่อให้ Face ID จดจำและสแกนใบหน้าได้แม่นยำขึ้นเมื่อผู้ใช้ต้องสวมทั้งแว่นตาและแมสในเวลาเดียวกัน
NOTE : แว่นตานั้นจะใช้ได้เฉพาะแว่นสายตาเท่านั้น ไม่สามารถใช้แว่นกันแดดได้
อย่างไรก็ตาม Apple เตือนว่าการปลดล็อคด้วย Face ID ที่แม่นยำที่สุด คือ การตั้งค่า Face ID ที่สแกนใบหน้าแบบเต็มหน้าเท่านั้น แต่ด้วยสถานการณ์ปัจจุบันที่ผู้ใช้ต้องสวมใส่แมสอยู่ตลอดนั้น ตัวเลือก Face ID with a Mask ก็เป็นอีกทางหนึ่งที่แม้จะปลอดภัยน้อยลงกว่าการสแกนใบหน้าเต็ม แต่ก็เพิ่มความสะดวกในการใช้งานมากขึ้น รวมไปถึงเรื่องความปลอดภัยของผู้ใช้ที่ไม่ต้องถอดแมสออกเพื่อสแกนบ่อยๆด้วย
Face ID แบบสวมแมสนั้นยังสามารถใช้ยืนยันตัวตนการจ่ายเงินผ่าน Apple Pay ได้ อีกทั้งยังสามารถแทนการเข้าสู่ระบบด้วยการกรอกรหัสผ่านในแอปที่รองรับการใช้ Face ID ซึ่งแตกต่างจากฟีเจอร์ Apple Watch Face ID รุ่นก่อน
ดูเหมือนว่า การปลดล็อคด้วย Face ID แบบใส่แมสนี้จะรองรับเฉพาะ iPhone 12 หรือรุ่นที่ใหม่กว่า เนื่องจากฟีเจอร์ดังกล่าวยังไม่พร้อมใช้งานสำหรับผู้ใช้ iPhone 11 ในขณะนี้
