A closer look at the seasons for Paredes, Scally, and more in Germany

The club campaigns for several American players in Germany’s top divisions have ended, opening the door to a potential busy summer of international action.

Kevin Paredes, Joe Scally, and Johan Gomez are just three American players that could be featuring in competitions this summer with either the U.S. men’s national team or the U.S. men’s olympic national team.

Lennard Maloney will be pushing on the door for his USMNT opportunity after debuting last fall while John Brooks is a veteran player hoping to get back in the mix. Jordan Pefok’s club and international future remains unknown after his season-long loan from Union Berlin has ended.

Maximilian Dietz will hope to be fit for Olympic involvement after a breakout first full campaign with Greuther Furth.

Here is a closer look at the Americans, whose club seasons have ended in Germany:

Kevin Paredes

Kevin Paredes took major strides in his development this season, setting new career highs in appearances for Wolfsburg.

Paredes, 21, made 29 combined appearances for the 12th-place finishers, scoring two goals and logging over 1,500 minutes of action. The versatile winger/full back featured in multiple roles for Wolfsburg this season, helping the club avoid a relegation scrap and finish outside of the bottom three.

Paredes will not only be on Gregg Berhalter’s radar this summer, but also Marko Mitrovic’s.

Joe Scally

The 2023-24 Bundesliga season marked the third-consecutive 30+ appearance campaign for Joe Scally.

Scally, 21, made 35 combined appearances for Borussia Moenchengladbach, scoring one goal and adding four assists. Featuring mainly as a right back, Scally was a regular contributor for Gladbach this season, helping them avoid dropping into the bottom three.

He will now aim to replace Sergino Dest as the USMNT’s No. 1 right back following Dest’s torn ACL earlier this year.

Lennard Maloney

Lennard Maloney’s first full Bundesliga season was a successful and productive one.

The 24-year-old featured in 31 matches for Heidenheim, who finished in just outside of the top-seven this season. Maloney totaled 2,292 minutes in Bundesliga action, scoring one goal and adding one assist.

His productive role with the club led to Maloney earning his USMNT debut last Fall. Maloney will now aim to be in the Copa America squad this summer.

Brenden Aaronson

Brenden Aaronson’s season-long loan spell at Union Berlin started rough but ended on a much more positive note.

Aaronson, 23, scored two goals and added two assists as Union Berlin fought off relegation from the Bundesliga. The USMNT attacker overcame some rough moments to play a key role this spring for the club.

His Leeds United future looks bleak, but a strong summer could propel Aaronson into a larger role elsewhere.

Jordan Pefok

Jordan Pefok’s club future is also in question after the conclusion of his loan spell with Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Pefok scored seven goals and added three assists in 27 combined appearances, fighting off multiple injuries this season. The 28-year-old helped Gladbach avoid a drop into the relegation zone, setting himself up for a new chapter this summer.

Union Berlin could use attacking help for next season, but Pefok might also be on the radar of other German clubs if his parent club doesn’t want to keep him.

Johan Gomez

Johan Gomez made the move to Eintracht Braunschweig last summer and proceeded to play an important role in the squad.

The 22-year-old midfielder/attacker tallied three goals and two assists, logging just under 2,300 minutes of playing time. Gomez, who is eligible for the Olympic Team, scored twice in six Under-23 appearances since Mitrovic’s arrival as head coach.

He remains an intriguing USMNT prospect to watch heading into the 2024-25 campaign.

Timmy Chandler

34-year-old Timmy Chandler’s veteran presence in the Eintracht Frankfurt squad might keep him around for another season.

Chandler made just eight combined appearances this season, registering two assists. The former USMNT player might not see growing playing time next season, but remains a valuable leader for the young players in the Frankfurt squad.

Julian Green

Julian Green’s production took a dip this season but the 28-year-old remains a key part of the Greuther Furth squad.

Green scored four goals and added four assists in 26 combined appearances. Despite missing ample time this spring, Green played one minute on Sunday in his first appearance since March 16.

Green’s versatility and creativity could be on the radar of several Bundesliga clubs, if he wants to depart Furth.

Terrence Boyd

Waldhof Mannheim fought off relegation from the 3. Liga thanks to Terrence Boyd’s impact in the club’s attack.

Boyd tallied seven goals and two assists in 18 appearances for Waldhof after joining from Kaiserslautern during the January Transfer Window. The 33-year-old finished the season with 11 goals for both clubs, continuing to deliver at club level.

Waldhof will hope for a better overall campaign next season and with Boyd in the attacking corps, they definitely have options to do so.

Maximilian Dietz

22-year-old Maximilian Dietz enjoyed a breakout campaign for Greuther Furth this season.

Dietz made 30 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga as Furth finished in the top half of the league standings. After making only four appearances last season, the young centerback earned valuable experience heading into next season.

Dietz is an option for the Olympic Team this summer after making six appearances under Mitrovic dating back to 2023.
