A significant scandal erupted in the first days of the new year in the Ukrainian press and social media. A video by the group of artists The Good and Light Warriors, also known for his provocative actions, has been published on the Internet, in which one of the company’s members, 24-year-old Natalija Derevjanko, takes down the pedestal of the controversial statue of Stepan Bandera in Lemberg. The recording may have been made in the summer, but its release is timed for the anniversary of Bandera’s birth on January 1.
Stepan Bandera is an icon of Ukrainian nationalists, while those of other beliefs are mostly Nazi collaborators and anti-Semites.
The video, presumably intended as a kind of art project, was first released on Vimeo, from which it was removed within a few hours, but that was enough to start spreading on Ukrainian social media.
The nationalists understandably treat the matter as a serious provocation and strongly attack-threaten Derevjanko in the social media.
The police have launched an investigation, in particular into the fact that the monument was still in camera, but the incident came as a surprise to the organs
