Ajax based on the 2019/2020 financial year still paid bonuses to its board members. Since last year – when the corona crisis started – the board members left that bonus, so that Ajax could claim the NOW subsidy from the government. In connection with the subsidy conditions for NOW 3.0, no bonuses were paid with regard to the 2020/2021 financial year.
From the annual report, which can be read at Ajax.nl, it can now be concluded that Ajax did not meet the conditions for a NOW subsidy in the 2019/2020 financial year. Ajax did not meet the minimum turnover decrease of twenty percent and therefore the subsidy application for the NOW 2.0 was withdrawn and the advance received was refunded. Because no NOW was finally received over that period, the bonuses that were not paid out at the time also came into the picture.
General manager Edwin van der Sar thus received a bonus of 350,000 euros, while director of football affairs Marc Overmars received a bonus of 75,000 euros. Financial director Susan Lenderink receives a bonus of 100,000 euros, while commercial director Menno Geelen received 75,000 euros as a bonus amount.
2020/2021
Over the past financial year 2020/2021, the Ajax management has waived bonuses. The management claimed bonuses for the goals achieved and the sporting achievements of Ajax, but decided to waive this themselves. Over the past financial year, Ajax did not pay any bonus to its board members.
