Ajax has many short-term contracts: is there a threat of an Amsterdam exodus?

Ajax must take into account a significant underrun in the upcoming summer transfer window. Many players have an expiring contract, while many also have a contract until the summer of 2023. Director of football affairs Marc Overmars and technical manager Gerry Hamstra will have until that period to extend some contracts.

The number of direct expiring contracts is a lot higher with the first team Ajax this season than a year ago . Last season only the experienced staff Maarten Stekelenburg and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar were out of their contracts. This year, six players, one of which is a mercenary, from the A-selection have an expiring contract.2022

Several players have a contract that runs until the summer of 2022. There is therefore a good chance that these players will be transfer-free in a few months. leave at Ajax. There may be six from the first team, although you may not really like the Brian Brobbey rented from RB Leipzig count.

It may well be the case that Ajax will lose two keepers from the A-selection in the summer. It is no longer a secret that André Onana is leaving for Internazionale. Maarten Stekelenburg also has an expiring contract. The goalkeeper, who has been sidelined for almost the entire season with an injury, has to wait and see whether Ajax will grant him a new contract.

Also Noussair Mazraoui seems to be heading for the exit. The player, who exchanged agent Mustapha Nakhli for Mino Raiola last summer, has an expiring contract and the chance that the right back will extend his contract with Ajax is smaller by the week. Raiola indicated a few weeks ago that there is ‘a difficult situation’. ‘But nothing is excluded. There are differences of opinion about the financial status.’

Zakaria Labyad also has an expiring contract. The midfielder hardly ever plays and for that reason a transfer-free departure in the summer seems a logical next step.

Danilo Pereira also has an expiring contract in Amsterdam. The Brazilian is often on the bench and knows that the competition has not diminished with the arrival of Brobbey. In the media he is linked to a temporary transfer to Vitesse. A transfer-free departure may also follow for him in the summer.

There are also several players at Jong Ajax with an expiring contract. The most striking name in this list is that of Youri Regeer

. The right back, who is originally a midfielder, is the captain of Young Ajax and recently made his debut in Ajax’s main squad. In addition, he was on a training camp to Portugal. Given his development, a contract extension would therefore be logical and Ajax Showtime knows that the talent is now almost finished with Ajax about a new contract.

2023

The summer of 2023 still seems far away at the moment, but exciting times may be ahead for these players too. After all: if Ajax still wants to earn something from these players, a transfer in the coming summer or in the extreme case in the winter transfer period of next year is the only option.

The most striking name in this list is the name of Ryan Gravenberch. The latest reports are that Ajax and the Gravenberch camp are still talking to each other, although those conversations not very smooth . The talented midfielder can count on a lot of interest from abroad and that would make making a decision more difficult. Ajax watcher Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf recently announced that the Gravenberch camp wants to leave Ajax behind with a transfer fee. ‘If he doesn’t sign, he will leave in the summer.’

Daley Blind also has a contract until mid-2023. The experienced defender, who also serves as midfielder, has already indicated several times that he does not rule out that he wants to end his career at Ajax . He does want to remain of value for the Amsterdam club. He does not like a structural place on the bench and for that reason a transfer to a (foreign) club is not entirely excluded.

Under the descending contracts also include some players who are nominated to make a transfer. Among them Nicolás Tagliafico, Sean Klaiber, Victor Jensen and David Neres. Ajax actually wanted to sell Tagliafico, Klaiber and Neres last summer, but transfers failed to materialize. In the summer Ajax – if it wants to keep a transfer fee to these players – has the last chance to earn something from these players. Jensen (21) recently indicated that he wants to play more at the highest level and so he also seems to be leaving. Among others, Rosenborg BK and Malmö FF would like Jensen

The list of expiring contracts in 2023 also includes some players who knock on the door of Ajax 1. Charlie Setford, Naci Ünüvar, Kristian Hlynsson and Amourricho van Axel Dongen were among the selection for the training camp in Portugal and they all have a contract expiring in 2023.

Ajax does not have to worry about the players who are committed until 2024, although the club will not be too long wait before offering new contracts to this group of players. In the past period, Ajax failed to come out with a contract extension with several players. In addition, more or less planned transfers did not take place, as a result of which there are now also players with an (almost) expiring contract and a decreased transfer value.

With Jurriën Timber currently holds gold in Ajax’s hands. The central defender is still committed until the summer of 2024 and for the time being his contract situation is ‘good’. However, a new and improved offer within the next few months would only be logical given the stormy development of Timber.

Midfielder Davy Klaassen also has a contract that runs until the summer of 2024. Klaassen has ended up on the bench this season, although he does not let that fool him. ‘Keep calm if things don’t go the way you hoped or expected. A career sometimes has lows. You have to be able to deal with that. Keeping calm is the only right thing’,

he recently told Ajax Life .

Klaassen does not regret his return to Ajax in the least. ‘Ajax will always be special to me and I wanted to play at a higher level. The Eredivisie may not be, but the training sessions at Ajax are of a higher level than at Everton or Werder Bremen.’

Kenneth Taylor also has a contract until the summer of 2024. The midfielder will hope for more playing time in Amsterdam. Taylor has been struggling with the first team for about two years, but he has not really broken through yet. Dusan Tadić (33) also has a contract with Ajax until mid-2024. The captain is 35 years old at the end of his contract and therefore Ajax will not be in a hurry with a contract extension for the time being. In addition, Tadić is, for now, under contract as a (youth) trainer at Ajax from the summer of 2024 to the summer of 2027.

No less than nine players from Ajax’s A-selection have a contract that runs until the summer of 2025. This group of players includes some players with a decent (potential) transfer value. For example, Ajax could expect substantial transfer fees in the future for Perr Schuurs, Lisandro Martínez, Devyne Rensch, Edson Álvarez, Mohammed Kudus and Antony. The talented Jay Gorter is also under contract until 2025, although the goalie will still have to prove his worth in Ajax 1.

Steven Berghuis and Sébastien also Haller have a contract until 2025. Berghuis feels at home at Ajax and the attacking midfielder seems to be part of the club’s A-selection in the coming years. Given those circumstances, it seems unlikely, although you never know in football, that Ajax will make huge profits at Berghuis. The creative will be 33 years old in the summer of 2025.

Haller was acquired from West Ham United a year ago for 22.5 million euros. The striker seems to be in his place at Ajax, especially in the Champions League. There would be interest from Borussia Dortmund, although Ajax will not let Haller go easily. Ajax will probably lose more players in the summer and the club will also want to maintain some continuity. On the other hand: can Ajax decline an extremely high offer from a foreign club?

2026

At the moment there is one player at Ajax with a contract until the summer of 2026: Mohamed Daramy. The Danish attacker, who came over from FC Copenhagen last summer, has not yet been able to fully convince in his first six months at Ajax. It is possible that Daramy, after six months of getting used to Ajax and in Amsterdam, will have a better second half of the season. Expiring contract in 2026:
