In the wake of his sixth place in Sochi, Fernando returned to Istanbul Park for the first time in ten years.
After missing the podium in narrowly in Russia, the Spaniard will want to continue his momentum in Turkey.
In the last laps in Russia, the 98th podium of your career seemed possible. What do you think of this crazy end of the race in Sochi?
We were so close to the podium in Russia and I had the feeling that it was going to be play on merit. I think it might have been possible if it hadn’t been raining so hard in the last laps. It was very difficult for all of us to predict and we were not the only ones to lose positions in the final. In the end, we came away with good points and sixth place, so we can’t be too disappointed. We even have to be pretty happy with our competitiveness in wet and dry conditions and build on this momentum in Turkey.
You last raced in Turkey ten years ago. Are you eager to return to Istanbul Park?
I have fond memories of the Turkish Grand Prix. It’s a circuit with a good mix of fast corners and overtaking opportunities. The eighth corner is a unique challenge and I look forward to negotiating it with a contemporary F1. I also had a fun battle with Michael in 2006. He was in my exhausts at the exit of the last corner of the last lap. It was like one of the many track battles we’ve had this season. So it’s a circuit that I love to ride on and I can’t wait to be there. year. What has been your favorite moment at this point in the season?
I think Sochi was maybe one of my best races this year. The car was competitive during the race and the battles with Ferraris, McLaren and Red Bull were very exciting at the end. We had gained several places in just a few laps. The Sprint Qualifying at Silverstone was also fun, as was Hungary for obvious reasons. We had some good races this year and above all we were consistent. We must continue on this path and score as many points as possible so that the team ends the year on a high note.
