In recent days we have witnessed at least some interesting announcements from Intel and AMD for the laptop market. The first of the companies during CES 2022 presented nearly 30 mobile processors from three product groups: Alder Lake-H, Alder Lake-P and Alder Lake-U. At CES, at least some very interesting devices using 12th generation processors were shown, such as the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold, the first foldable laptop with a 17.3 “screen diagonal when unfolded. In turn, AMD presented the new generation of Rembrandt APU processors at its conference. , which consist of a total of 10 units, divided into the Rembrandt-H and Rembrandt-U series. We collect all the most important information about the new platforms in the form of collective material.
We look at read all the news introduced by AMD Rembrandt and Intel Alder Lake processors for notebooks. Interesting facts can be found, for example, in the topic of PCIe 4.0 lines and memory controllers.
AMD Rembrandt – new generation Ryzen 6000 processors with RDNA 2 chips. Ryzen 7 5800X3D debut in spring 2022
In one day Intel and AMD presented new generations of processors for virtually all groups of laptops – from powerful gaming notebooks to mobile workstations, ultrabooks and hybrids, to foldable devices So far, both companies have rather not presented their new products in one day and one fair, which only shows how important the laptop market will be for Intel and AMD in 2022. At the same time, both companies in several respects they presented a different approach to their processors, sometimes even surprising. Intel is introducing its hybrid architecture to all categories of laptops. However, this is not the first attempt by Intel with such hybrids. The first test field was the Lakefield architecture, which consisted of 5 cores – 1 efficient Sunny Cove and 4 energy-efficient Tremonts. It was on them that the first foldable laptops were created, ie Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold. At the same time, it was a field for further experimentation, which in the new “assemblies” will result in Alder Lake-U systems with a much greater field to show off. This time in the series we will get up to 10 cores and 12 threads, which will certainly translate into higher performance of such unusual designs as the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold.

ASUS Zenbook 14X Space Edition – First impressions of the space ultrabook with Intel Core i7-12700H processor
AMD takes a traditional approach, with one type of Zen 3+ core in the new Rembrandt APUs. Further modifications to the microarchitecture in conjunction with the transition to 6 nm TSMC lithography is to bring about a further increase in the efficiency of the cores (over 10% in Single-core and even nearly 30% in Multi-core calculations). In addition, the introduction of new energy saving techniques, including in deep sleep states it is expected to lead to a further extension of battery life, allowing the result to be obtained at the level of up to 24 hours. The most important novelty in the Rembrandt APU are the Radeon 680M and Radeon 660M integrated graphics systems, based on the RDNA 2 architecture. They have high core clock speeds, resulting from the use of new lithography (up to 2400 MHz), and also work in a duet with DDR5 and LPDDR5 memory. Here we will see another change in the approach of both companies to new processors. As for the iGPU RDNA 2 itself, it will offer support, among others for hardware Ray Tracing and support for the AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution technique, which will affect the possibility of playing in Full HD resolution even in new AAA titles.
Intel Alder Lake-H, Alder Lake-P and Alder Lake-U – presentation of the 12th generation of processors for powerful laptops and ultrabooks
Intel offers a memory controller that supports a total of 4 types of RAM: DDR4 (3200 MHz), LPDDR4x (4267 MHz), DDR5 (4800 MHz) and LPDDR5 (5200 MHz). both DDR4 modules (e.g. those slightly cheaper) and DDR5 (for top configurations). AMD decided to cut off DDR4 memory very quickly, offering a controller that supports only DDR5 and LPDDR5 modules. Interestingly, Rembrandt processors will be able to handle LPDDR5 memory with higher frequency compared to Intel – 6400 vs 5200, which will certainly also affect the edition Quality of integrated RDNA graphics systems 2. Putting only the DDR5 / LPDDR5 controller also makes you wonder what the issue of Rembrandt desktop APUs will look like (if they appear at all) – after all, the AM4 platform does not support DDR5. In turn, the upcoming AM5 is also dropping DDR4 support. Therefore, it is possible that desktop Rembrandts will also require the AM5 stand, which is related to the fact that AMD is preparing identical APU arrays for laptops and desktops, which is to reduce the costs associated with the preparation of two different types of APUs for two market segments. However, using only DDR5 memory, at least in the initial lifetime of the platform, may translate into fewer laptops with new APUs.

Further changes took place in the context of using the PCIe 4.0 bus. This time both companies support PCIe 4.0, but Intel has decided to … reduce the number of lines in their mobile processors of the 12th generation compared to the 11th generation (Tiger Lake-H This time we have 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes at our disposal, 8 of which will be available for the GPU, and another 8 for two PCIe 4.0 SSDs. AMD offers … more PCIe 4.0 lanes from Intel, because 20. Nevertheless, the maximum 8 will be offered for GPU, the rest can be used, for example, for SSD. In addition, the AMD platform will offer an upgrade compared to the Renoir and Cezanne generation. great multimedia facilities. There will be support for USB 4, WiFI 6E (modules prepared in cooperation with Qualcomm and MediaTek), HDMI 2.1, HDR10, Dolby Vision and the AV1 codec in integrated RDNA 2 graphics systems – this is the most important change. In this respect, Intel will offer everything that we already had on the occasion of the 11th generation. In short, there will be, among others, Thunderbolta 4, USB 4, WiFi 6E or AV1 codec.
