Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Dest, Pulisic, and more

Sergino Dest has been praised by Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez for his hard work in the squad and the U.S. men’s national team defender delivered his latest impressive outing on Sunday in a shutout win.

Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Camp Nou with Dest making his third-straight start for the club this month. Dest started at left back with veteran Dani Alves taking his spot on the right side of Barcelona’s 4-3-3 formation. The 21-year-old completed 95% of his passes in the shutout victory, while also completing two dribbles and making one interception.

It was Barcelona’s third-straight win in all competitions, moving one point behind third-place Real Betis in the La Liga standings. Dest has risen to the challenge in 2022 under Xavi and with USMNT World Cup Qualifying matches coming in late-March, he will continue to fight for starting minutes with five club matches left before international duty.

In England, Christian Pulisic delivered a lively perofrmance for Chelsea, but the Blues fell in the Carabao Cup Final to Liverpool. Josh Sargent played 90 minutes for Norwich City in Premier League play, but the Canaries lost at Southampton.

In Germany, Ricardo Pepi and Tyler Adams both started for their respective clubs. Chris Richards remained on the sidelines for Hoffenheim despite returning to training this week.

In Spain, Yunus Musah played 78 minutes as Valencia claimed a 1-0 road win over Mallorca.

In Italy, Gianluca Busio earned a start for Venezia, but the Serie A club loss to Hellas Verona. Tanner Tessmann appeared off of the bench for the visitors.

In France, Erik Palmer-Brown started for Troyes in a 1-1 draw against Marseille. Konrad De La Fuente did not feature for the Ligue 1 visitors.

Elsewhere, Alan Sonora scored off the bench against Boca Juniors while Jordan Pefok regitsered one assist in a 3-1 win for Young Boys. Ian Harkes and Christian Ramirez went head-to-head in Scottish Premiership action. Cameron Carter-Vickers helped Celtic post a clean sheet against Hibernian. Bryan Reynolds and Sam Vines both started in Belgium league play.
