Alejandro Zendejas’ stellar season with Liga MX powerhouse Club America helped him earn his first senior call up to the U.S. men’s national team, and the 24-year-old celebrated by delivering a Man of the Match performance in Saturday’s league draw.
Zendejas scored once and assisted once in Club America’s 2-2 draw with Puebla, giving the talented attacker his first goal and assist of the new Clausura season. Despite Club America being pegged back twice by the visitors in the final score, Zendejas showed exactly what he can bring to the table for the USMNT. Zendejas’ pass to Henry Martin helped Club America break the deadlock from Estadio Azteca, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage. Zendejas called his own number in the 67th minute, roofing a shot into the top-left corner to extend Club America’s lead to 2-1 at the time.
Zendejas finished the match with the most chances created (3), the most dribbles completed (1), and seven duels won. Up next for Zendejas is a pair of international friendlies with the USMNT against Serbia and Colombia in California.
In England, Josh Sargent scored his 10th league goal of the season for Norwich City. Zack Steffen and Middlesbrough lost to rivals Sunderland while Ethan Horvath earned his 10th clean sheet of the season.
In Germany, Gio Reyna delivered a stellar winning goal for Borussia Dortmund. Kevin Paredes assisted once in Wolfsburg’s victory over Freiburg.
In Italy, Weston McKennie logged 90 minutes as Juventus defeated Atalanta.
Elsewhere, Djordje Mihailovic helped AZ Alkmaar move to second in the Eredivisie table. Ricardo Pepi assisted once despite FC Groningen’s loss. Malik Tillman started in Rangers’ Scottish Cup win over St Johnstone. Alex Mendez came off the bench and scored for FC Vizela in a 2-1 loss to Sporting Lisbon.
