Apple alienated many fans, users, critics and authorities when it decided in 2020 to give up the chargers included in the iPhone cases. However, the decision is not a global one. In France for example phones from the series iPhone 13 come with headphones , and in Brazil Apple is being investigated by the authorities for the lack of a charger in the box.
In France, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max come with a pair of EarPods in the box. This is because the legislation of this country requires that all phones come with a “hands free kit”, which protects children under 14 years of electromagnetic radiation. The practice was also valid for iPhone 12 . Apple sells iPhone 13 in two boxes in France : a larger one that includes headphones and the smaller one, the classic one of the phone.
The extra packaging somehow digs into the ecological image of the company, which aims to reduce pollution through the lack of chargers and reduce the number of electronic waste. Meanwhile in Brazil, Consumer Protection has launched an investigation into Apple’s decision to stop offering accessories in the box. I remind you that in 2020 the same authorities forced Apple to offer chargers with iPhone 12 units in Brazil , and the American giant was also fined by Brazilians $ 2 million in 2021.
The head of the Procon Association (Pro Consumers), Fernando Capez, said it was illegal to sell a separate phone and charger, forcing customers to buy two products. Apparently it is not enough that Apple has informed its customers about this. A multi-party lawsuit is also being prepared, with the plaintiffs being customers who think they should have received a free charger.
