The municipality of Ariquemes (RO) , 200 kilometers from Porto Velho, this week received the title of “Capital do Tambaqui“.
The recognition was given through state law No. 5,264, approved by the Legislative Assembly of Rondônia and signed by the Governor Marcos Rocha (PSL).
According to the law published in the Official Gazette (Diof), from now on, “the title of Capital of Tambaqui to the city of Ariquemes” is granted.
The city received this recognition because it is the largest producer of fish in Rondônia, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In 2020, according to the latest data from the Municipal Livestock Survey (PPM), Ariquemes was responsible for 8 of the 39 thousand kilos of tambaqui produced in the state.
It is also in Ariquemes that one of the biggest parties involving fish takes place. At Festival do Tambaqui hundreds of fish strips are roasted simultaneously for the population.
Also according to the IBGE, about 40% of all national production of tambaqui is from Rondônia, with Ariquemes leading the state production. In 2020, the state export of tambaqui increased by 648%.
Tambaqui is the second largest scale fish in Brazil (the first being the arapaima). It is a native fish of the Amazon basin, with a flavor and texture that pleases the Brazilian palate.
In 1998, a 28.5 kg tambaqui fish caught by researcher Laerte Alves in the Guaporé, in Rondônia, represented a world record held for 9 years (
The record of Rondônia was broken in 2007, with a tambaqui of 32.4 kilos hooked in Lago Grande, in Amazonas.
