It is one of the really big consumption trends that the corona pandemic has brought about: order groceries via app and have them delivered in a few minutes. Especially in big cities like Berlin, hundreds of thousands of people now use the services of startups like Gorillas or Nimble . Initially out of necessity because of the months-long lockdowns, now out of habit. The business attracts investors: together, Gorillas and Flink have already raised over two billion euros in venture capital. Both providers have thus risen to become unicorns in record time – startups worth billions. This is increasingly attracting more founders to the scene. You fall back on the proven business model of existing providers, but rely on an assortment in the niche. Example Arive : The Munich startup doesn’t advertise vegetables and pasta from the supermarket, but with high-priced household goods. The range includes cosmetic products (hand soaps from Aesop for 30 euros), jewelry (pearl earrings for 90 euros), perfume, scented candles and all kinds of technology. For example, Arive is selling a brand new Macbook Pro from Apple for just under 1500 euros. Also on offer: headphones, smartwatches and cameras.
These founders are behind Arive :
Arive was founded in February 2021 by the student friends Linus Fries (23) and Maximilian Reeker (22). Fries attended business schools in the USA and London. Reeker, on the other hand, is a business graduate and has already gained experience in the startup and VC industry through internships. Both come from Düsseldorf. With their delivery startup Arive, the founders are currently active in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg.
The delivery is Arive on its website in just 30 minutes in prospect. But is that also true? I want to find out and do the test. Successful app, no delivery fees That suits me anyway, because I’ve been flirting with an Airtag . This is an Apple GPS chip that can be attached to objects. In the event of loss, for example, the front door key can be easily found using a smartphone. Of course, I could also buy the gadget in one of the Berlin Apple stores on site. Due to the pandemic, however, long queues are currently forming there. In addition, Arive offers all new customers a discount of ten euros on the first Order to. I not only get the Airtag delivered quickly, but also save money. So go ahead: Download and order the Arive app.
Hier waren offensichtlich Profis am Werk: Der Designer, der die Arive-App mitentwickelt hat, soll zuvor auch die App von Gorillas verantwortet haben.
There were obviously professionals at work here: The designer who helped develop the Arive app should also use the Gorillas app beforehand have been responsible.

The Interface
is inviting from the start. Lots of white space, large fonts and subtle icons emphasize the luxury that Arive apparently wants to meet with its service. Unfortunately, the app is only available in English so far, a German translation is missing. But the range is much larger than expected. According to the startup, there are more than 1000 items. However, anyone who browses here without a clear purchase intention will quickly lose track of things. Fortunately, I already know what I’m looking for: The “Tech” button prominently placed in the app takes me quickly to the technology products. I scroll past charging cables and cell phone cases to the air tags in a few seconds. At 35 euros, the device is priced the same as Apple. But I still have the new customer discount, so in the end it will only be 25 euros. The order process is quick. Since I have previously registered in the Arive app with my Apple account, my credit card and delivery address are already stored automatically. Alternatively, customers can also log in with their Facebook and Google accounts or their own telephone number. One negative point: Payment via PayPal is not possible. A plus point: There is no minimum order value at Arive. A delivery fee is currently still waived. This isn’t all that surprising compared to grocery delivery services like Gorillas. Because due to the high-priced range, Arive should achieve significantly higher shopping carts on average. That makes the free delivery easier.

Arive missed delivery target significantly

The startup is relatively cautious about the delivery time : In less than 30 minutes should I have the Apple Airtag at my apartment door in Berlin district Prenzlauer Berg can receive, it says on the website of Arive. It’s still incredibly fast, no question about it. But Gorillas delivered my weekend shopping to me in under six minutes. This is how expectations change.

Does Arive at least keep its delivery promise? At first I am confident. After I clicked on “Place order”, the app shows the next steps: The order is immediately marked as “received” with a tick, and according to the overview, the item is also packaged a few minutes later. I can also see on a map that the Arive warehouse is just under two kilometers from my apartment. Now my order only has to be picked up by a courier, then it could work with the 30 minutes. But nothing is picked up at first: the app only shows “Waiting for pick up” – minute by minute goes by. In the end, I only get the message after 30 minutes that a driver is out and about with the Apple gadget.
Die bestellte Ware überreicht Arive in einer hochwertigen Papiertüte – je nach Artikel auch im Mini-Format.
Arive hands over the ordered goods in a high-quality paper bag – depending on the article also in mini format.

Then it takes again another 20 minutes until it arrives at the apartment door rings. After all: at the handover the driver is extremely friendly. Easily out of breath from the corridor to the third floor, she apologizes for the delay and hands me a small, but high-quality light blue paper bag with drawstring handles . The air day is located in it, as ordered. When I asked, the driver told me that she was currently delivering between ten and 15 orders for Arive every day. There is hardly any idling. At 13 euros an hour, earnings are slightly above the level of the future minimum wage. Which articles are ordered most frequently from Arive? She couldn’t say that, assures the driver. You don’t look in the bag when you pick up the orders. I give the driver a tip (not possible via the app) and say goodbye.

Conclusion

Arive occupies an open niche in the fast delivery business. With the high-priced range, the startup mainly appeals to technology fans and high earners. Anyone who is already familiar with delivery services such as Gorillas or Flink will quickly find their way around the Arive app. However, it is advantageous to have a certain desired item in mind beforehand. Otherwise you will spend a lot of time looking for the right product because of the large range. The range is simply too expensive for impulse purchases. In addition to Apple, there are many other tried and tested branded products in the app – even sex toys can be ordered through Arive. Arive can maintain the luxury claim until delivery, because the startup has paid attention to higher quality materials for the paper bags. Compared to the simple bags from Lieferando and Gorillas, these are likely to require higher sums of money on the cost side. Only with the delivery time did Arive disappoint in the first attempt with 50 minutes. But I will definitely order at least one more time. In any case, investors are already convinced of the company’s idea. In September Arive was able to obtain a seed financing in the amount of six million euros collect. The round was led by the Berlin VCs La Famiglia and 468 Capital as well as the British model investor Balderton Capital. Incidentally, the latter is already employed by the London express delivery service Jokr. Its valuation: $ 1.2 billion.
