Lemma won by 2:04:01, 27 seconds ahead of second Kenyan Vincent Kipchumba. Mosinet Geremew, also from Ethiopia, came in third, and defending Ethiopian Shura Kitata finished in sixth place. As defending champion of the 2019 New York Marathon, Jepkosgei decided to start the island nation against next month’s American race, and it proved to be a good decision: in 2:17:43 hours, he triumphed with the seventh best time of all time. Second came the Ethiopian Degitu Azimeraw, his third compatriot, Ashete Bekere. Until last year, the London Marathon was traditionally held in April, but had to be postponed after the outbreak and then held in October, but only professional runners could take part. This time about forty thousand people started.
