Atletico Madrid 1-1 Manchester United – UCL Player Ratings

Manchester United clinched a late equalizer to escape the defeat at Wanda Metropolitano.

Manchester United and Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Wednesday. The Red Devils prepare for the second leg as the favourites after prizing away a precious draw from Spain.

Elanga is on fire!

Atletico Madrid came into the game on the back of their 3-0 win over Osasuna on Saturday. The Rojiblancos started the game with great rhythm, stunning United with an early opener.

Following a perfect cross from Renan Lodi, Joao Felix scored a diving header to put Atletico ahead. The Rojiblancos then continued dominating the game for the rest of the first half. However, they were not able to extend their lead.

United started finding their feet in the game as soon as the second half started. The Red Devils pressed with more intensity while occasionally creating serious chances.

However, they were not able to score the equalizer until the 80th minute. A brilliant pass from Bruno Fernandes found Anthony Elanga running behind Atletico’s backline. The 19-year-old then smashed the ball past Jan Oblak with a precise low shot.

Elanga’s strike was enough to secure United a 1-1 draw in Madrid while Atletico saw their lead vanish in the final ten minutes.

What’s next for United and Atletico?

The Red Devils will face Watford in their next Premier League game on Saturday while Atletico prepare to meet Celta Vigo in La Liga on the same day.
