Automotive: BMW innovates with a controversial chameleon car

BMW has just unveiled its latest electric vehicle. And already many observers agree that this model risks being a nightmare for the police all over the world.

Automaker BMW’s latest SUV, dubbed BMW iX Flow, was presented at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The particularity of this vehicle is quite simply its electrophoretic technology developed by the Taiwanese company E-Ink, which allows the bodywork to change color in two seconds.

At the simple pressure of At the touch of a button, the driver can change the hue of the car’s exterior, allowing the color to switch between black and white or even light and dark stripes by activating e-ink in the wrap-around shell. In short, a chameleon car that changes color, going from white to black or even gray for now, as BMW has indicated that more vibrant colors may be included in the future.

The effect is created by applying an electric charge to the microcapsules, which contain particles of white and black pigments, suspended in a liquid enclosed in the envelope. The color alternates depending on whether a negative or positive charge is applied, causing white or black pigments to accumulate on the surface of the microcapsule.

The manufacturer in its attempt to combine car and advanced technology have not been cut short. Incidentally, the German car company said that it “brings life to the body of the car ” with the wrap specially developed for its iX all-electric SUV model, which uses the same technology as Amazon’s Kindle e-reader.

« You decide what you want to wear, what is your status on social networks. Now you can decide what your car looks like

But this model supposed to highlight the ingenuity of the brand, is already talking about more than one. Some say they do not understand the usefulness of this option, while others think that this vehicle could become a real nightmare for the police, with this feature. The daily general information 20 minutes is of this opinion. He even produced a video, with the title “CES Las Vegas – BMW shows off a car that could become a “nightmare for the police” . If some observers say that during a chase, the police will have great difficulty in recognizing a vehicle, which changes at any time. Others say the opposite, because for them, neither the shape nor the registration of the four-wheeled machine will change. In addition, looking closely at the demonstration video, we realize that the fuel door does not change color.

The real problem that could arise would be from a legal point of view, because the color of any vehicle is indicated on the gray card. Hence the question of the legality of different model colors. “Is it legal to change the color of a registered vehicle?”

To this question, the project manager, Stella Clarke simply replies that in “terms of legality, I think that this needs to be discussed. This is always the case with new technologies
