Being Reincarnated as a Sword Sounds Pretty Fun, Actually
by Kara Dennison October 2, 2021
Isekai anime are getting progressively weirder… especially reincarnation isekai. There was a time you could just show up with a couple of cheat powers and get on with things. But now people are waking up as villainesses and soda machines and skeletons and spiders. Light novel series Reincarnated as a Sword is even getting its own anime adaptation.
At first, Teacher’s fate freaked us out a little bit. But on a second look, we think maybe this intelligent blade has the dream life. Or maybe we’re just trying to hold back an existential crisis. Either way, humor us. Here’s why sword life would be totally fine and we wouldn’t miss a human body at all.
Cheat Powers
The isekai life is fraught with speedbumps. The good news is, you often get something to make up for those pitfalls; even if that “something” isn’t readily evident. The hero of Reincarnated as a Sword is genre-savvy enough to know that, if he’s in this position, he can probably do some kind of high-end magic. And he can!
“Teacher” has a lot of abilities, including summoning a familiar and creating a clone of himself. Best of all, that power will help his wielder. Oh, right. Swords need wielders. Well, that’s one more good thing…
Get Carried Everywhere
The immediate problem of being reincarnated as a sword?… No legs. No nothing. You’re a sword. That’s the whole point. That’s why Teacher needs a bold adventurer to carry him. Enter Fran, a catgirl in need of both a rad blade and guidance. And now she has both!
Getting carried everywhere is an extra bonus for adventurers in fantasy worlds, where walking is half of what you do. No more 30 meters per second life for you, my guy. You get to piggyback everywhere, and no one can tell you otherwise. They want you to walk? Just point to your complete lack of legs. Or… don’t. Because you can’t.
Passively Wreck People
Okay, this one genuinely appeals to us on a very real level. We’d love to be cool adventurers fighting monsters. But we’re also aware that the adventurers whose stories we see are the best of hundreds who couldn’t cut it. And we (or at least I — there’s a couple people in this newsroom who could probably fight) don’t have that level of swordsmanship. But when you’re reincarnated as a sword, that’s someone else’s problem.
Teacher brings the magic, Fran brings the active skills — and together, they take on the world. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.
Look forward to Reincarnated as a Sword, coming to the small screen in the near future.
