Big mistake: “Instrumental” 12 G/A titan is proving Lage wrong, he’d be key for Wolves

3 minute read

The previous summer transfer window was a rather busy one for Wolves behind the scenes.

Not just for the fact that they said goodbye to Nuno Espirito Santo and brought in Bruno Lage to replace him, but also because of the number of players that moved in and out of the Midlands club.

One player that left Molineux over the summer is Morgan Gibbs-White, who joined Championship club Sheffield United on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Which club did Wolves loan Willian Jose from in the 2021 January transfer window?

In 20 league appearances for the Blades this term, the 22-year-old has managed to rack up seven goals and five assists along the way, making himself a key player for the Yorkshire club, showing just how well he is doing away from Molineux.

In addition to his useful goals and assists, the Englishman’s overall performances have also been rather eye-catching, with WhoScored listing him as the highest-rated player at United with a season rating of 7.17/10, which would also make him Wolves’ highest-rated player by the same metric.

The midfielder’s latest appearance for his loan club saw him score two goals and provide one assist in their 4-0 win over Swansea City where he racked up an overall match rating of 8.4/10 from SofaScore.

Taking all of this into account, it’s easy to see why Billy Sharp described Gibbs-White as being “instrumental” to their team this season and why an argument could be made to suggest that Lage may have made a mistake in loaning the player out in the first place.

Should Morgan Gibbs-White be in Wolves’ squad next season?

No

Given how Wolves have only scored 23 goals in their 24 league games this season, leaving only Norwich City and Burnley having found the back of the net on fewer occasions, they could have done with having an attacking and creative midfield option such as Gibbs-White in their squad at times in this campaign to come in and score or provide a goal for another Wolves player.

If the youngster can end his loan spell with the Blades on a high note with more goals and assists under his belt, he could well have put himself in the frame to be a regular figure in Lage’s squad for next season.
