Big Mouth Season Five Promises Major Upheaval for Bridgeton Middle School Students

Great news, Big Mouth fans: Netflix is going back to Bridgeton Middle School with a fifth season of Big Mouth. At Tudum, their brand new online-only fan event, the streamer dropped dozens of trailers, photos, and sneak peeks of upcoming shows and movies, and one of the best surprises arrived with the announcement that Big Mouth is coming back sooner than expected.

Read on for everything we know about the new season, which promises to please hormone monsters, horny teenagers, and everyone in between.

What Will Big Mouth Season Five Be About?

According to Deadline, Big Mouth Season Five will focus on themes of love and hate, with new monsters descending on Bridgeton Middle School to bring these themes to life. Starting with “No Nut November” and ending with New Year’s Eve, the new season will introduce lovebugs and hateworms, amorphous creatures that can shift between the two forms (think caterpillars and butterflies). Nick’s lovebug, Walter (voiced by new cast member Brandon Kyle Goodman), pushes Nick to pursue his feelings for Jessi. When Nick’s pursuit ends in an embarrassing public rejection from Jessi, Walter transforms into a hateworm who leads Nick down a dark path. Shades of Andrew’s near-transformation into an incel back in Season Three, isn’t it? We’re guessing that Nick’s hateworm plotline will continue Big Mouth’s exploration of toxic masculinity.

Meanwhile, Jessi’s lovebug Sonya (voiced by new cast member Pamela Adlon) sits on Jessi’s shoulder as she gets closer with her friend Ali, wondering all the while if Ali is more than just a friend. Jessi and Ali’s growing bond, along with their co-opting of Missy’s affinity group, sends Missy into a hate spiral fueled by her own new hateworm, Rochelle (voiced by new cast member Keke Palmer). Eighth grade, man. It’s rough!

Goodman and Palmer are series regulars on Human Resources, the upcoming Big Mouth spin-off about the creatures who help humans journey through life, while Adlon is slated to appear as a guest star. Judging by the promise of their characters also showing up on Big Mouth, we’re guessing that we can expect Big Mouth and Human Resources to cross-pollinate in the future.

Earlier this year, co-creator Mark Levin teased another facet of Season Five, saying at a panel in April that the upcoming season will “explore a little bit more about kids advocating and becoming political.” We’ve seen the show get political before, touching on everything from the #MeToo movement to birth control access, but now, with at least the girls getting involved in affinity groups, it sounds like Big Mouth is going all-in.

When Will Big Mouth Season Five Premiere?

According to an announcement from Netflix, Big Mouth Season Five will launch on November 5. The announcement gestures at the season’s new themes, with “love” and “hate” tattooed on Hormone Monster Maury’s knuckles.
