Bikaner-Guwahati Express accident: Initial probe reveals tech glitch

Following the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train derailment that killed nine people and left several others injured, the railways department has ordered a high-level inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety to find out the root cause.

Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday reached New Domohani station and immediately proceeded towards the site on a motor trolley. He inspected the condition of the tracks and fittings to get first-hand information.

The minister told media persons, “We have carried out a detailed inspection of the tracks. It appears a sudden failure in equipment led to the accident. We have ordered an inquiry which will find the root cause.” Vaishnaw also inspected the under gear of Engine No. 22375 of the derailed train. The minister said it is a tragic incident and expressed his deep condolence to the families of the deceased and prayed for a speedy recovery of the injured.

He said all precautions and necessary actions will be taken so that such incidents do not take place again. Vaishnaw said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is constantly monitoring the situation and is in touch with him. The railway minister also visited hospitals and talked to the injured passengers. The railway department has already disbursed ex-gratia payments.
