The body of a teenage boy who drowned in East Jakarta’s Cipinang River has been found, four days after he was declared missing.
The victim, who has been identified as 13-year-old AM, went missing shortly after attempting to pick up his flip flop that had fallen into the river while it was raining heavily last Thursday. Strong currents at the time reportedly swept the boy away.
Hendra Sudirman, who heads the Search and Rescue (SAR) Office in Jakarta, said authorities were able to locate the victim after a joint team searched the Cipinang River using rubber boats and also on land along the riverbanks.
“Thanks to the synergy of the joint search and rescue team, we finally found the victim on the fourth day of the search mission. We will hand over the victim to his family for the next process,” Hendra said in a statement today.
Jakarta SAR Office’s spokesman Ramli Prasetio said AM’s body was found this morning at around 9:50am.
“The victim was found in the 3-kilometer radius from the scene of the incident, he was already dead,” Ramli said.
AM’s body has since been returned to his family for a funeral procession.
