Bongbong spitting on graves of martial law victims with presidential bid, says group

A campaign network seeking to prevent the return of Marcoses in power has criticized Bongbong Marcos’ presidential bid in Eleksyon 2022, saying that the former dictator’s son is like “spitting on martial victim’s graves.”

In a statement on Tuesday, the Campaign Against the Return of Marcoses and Martial Law (CARMMA) said Bongbong’s move was a “brazen show of disregard and contempt for thousands of Filipinos killed, disappeared, tortured, displaced and violated, and the Filipino nation whose economy was plundered and wrecked during the Marcos dictatorship.”

“BBM is spitting on the graves of the dead and on the faces of the victims of the Marcos dictatorship. Not a trace of remorse, nor any worthwhile compensation has been given by the Marcos family for the billions worth of treasure and gold that they plundered from the Philippine economy,” said CARMMA.

According to “Dark Legacy: Human Rights Under the Marcos Regime” by Alfred McCoy and reports by Amnesty International, 3,200 victims of extrajudicial killings, 77,000 political detainees, 3,500 torture victims, and more than 700 disappearances were recorded from 1975 to 1985.

The group further pointed out that the Marcoses have been seeking to reclaim the highest seat of power after they were kicked out of the country.

CARMMA said it will remain committed to calling out the Marcoses in their bid to return to power.

“We join hands with the rest of the Filipino people in declaring #NeverAgain and #NoDuterteMarcos2022,” the group said.

Bongbong earlier bared that he is seeking the highest national post, adding that he will  “bring back unifying form of leadership in the country.”
