Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Ramesh Chandra, founder of Unitech, and his daughter-in-law Preeti Chandra, wife of Sanjay Chandra under PMLA 2002.

ED has also arrested Rajesh Malik of Carnoustie Management (India) Pvt. They’ll be produced in court tomorrow for remand.

Members of Women Congress, All India Kisan Sabha and All India Democratic Women’s Association staged a protest outside UP Bhawan in Delhi today on Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Nine people, including 4 farmers, died on Sunday as violence erupted during a farmers’ protest in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Delhi unveils 10-point action plan to combat air pollution in winter

To combat air pollution in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced a 10-point “winter action plan” that focuses on dust control, using the Pusa bio-decomposer, installing smog towers and checking waste burning and vehicular emissions. He also urged the neighbouring states to retrofit thermal power plants in NCR areas with new technology and ensure the use of CNG-operated vehicles and cleaner fuel in industries in the region. Kejriwal claimed that the Centre and neighbouring states have not done anything to check stubble burning, which will lead to a rise in air pollution in the winter season. He appealed to the governments of neighbouring states to work together to make the air clean.

BKU chief asks BJP workers not to visit UP’s rural areas amid Lakhimpur violence

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) national president Naresh Tikait has asked BJP workers not to visit the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, saying farmers are angry over the violence that broke out in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday. Addressing a kisan panchayat at the BKU headquarters in Sisoli on Sunday night, he alleged that the BJP was trying to defame the farmers’ agitation by provoking violence. He asked the BJP workers not to visit the rural areas to avoid any untoward incident. The remarks came after eight people were killed on Sunday as violence erupted during a farmers’ protest, claiming the lives of both farmers and BJP workers ahead of a visit to Lakhimpur by UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

India, Sri Lanka begin 12-day military exercise with focus on counter-terror cooperation

India and Sri Lanka on Monday began a 12-day mega military exercise with a focus on enhancing counter-terror cooperation at the Combat Training School in the island nation’s eastern district of Ampara. The eighth edition of the ‘Mitra Shakti’ exercise from October 4 to 15 got underway with the participation of an all arms contingent of 120 Indian Army personnel, headed by Colonel Prakash Kumar, the Sri Lanka Army said. The joint military exercise has been designed to enhance understanding of transnational terrorism, inter-operability skills, conduct of joint tactical operations, sharing of each other’s best practices and experiences, it said.

Racket running casino from farmhouse in outer Delhi busted, 16 arrested

The police have busted a racket running a casino from a farmhouse in outer Delhi’s Alipur area and arrested 16 people allegedly involved in gambling, officials said on Sunday. The kingpin of the racket, Harvinder Solanki (45), has been running the casino for the last two years. He has also been organising such illegal gambling in different areas of Delhi-NCR, they said. Rs 1.67 lakh in cash along with plastic coins, poker tokens and chips of playing denomination approximately Rs 75 lakh were seized, police said.

Priyanka Gandhi, other Congress leaders reach Lakhimpur Kheri border

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other party leaders reached Lakhimpur border early Monday, but alleged they were not allowed to meet the victims of the violence that erupted during a farmers’ protest and claimed eight lives a day earlier. Priyanka Gandhi, who is accompanied by party leader Deepender Singh Hooda among others, had to take alternative routes to reach the bordering Hargaon area in Saitapur as heavy security was deployed on the main roads amid tension in the violence-hit region of Lakhimpur. “We are waiting outside Lakhimpur Kheri. We have been prevented by the police from entering. We have come here to meet the victims of the violence,” Congress national secretary Dheeraj Gurjar told PTI over the phone at 4.30 am.
