Brighton fans react to Newcastle United offer for Dan Burn – Interesting

Newcastle United are trying to buy Dan Burn and Brighton fans have had plenty to say about it.

The Geordie defender and boyhood Newcastle fan has particularly impressed this season as part of a Brighton team that has had plenty of admirers, under the leadership of Graham Potter.

Brighton currently ninth in the Premier League and hoping to build on that in the remaining three and a half months of the season.

Not wanting to lose any of their first team players, however, Dan Burn widely reported to be keen to take this chance of playing for the club he has always supported.

The 29 year old defender able to play centre-back and left-back, very tall but also mobile, a player who would definitely be a positive addition to Newcastle’s defensive options.

Newcastle United have had one offer already rejected, reportedly around the £8m mark, with a second bid now having gone in.

So what do the Brighton fans think about the Dan Burn situation…

Brighton fans commenting via their North Stand Chat message board:

‘I suspect Newcastle will up their offer to £11 or £12m for Burn & he will want to go for family reasons & financial ones.

Hope I’m wrong but I think it is more likely than not – Unless they have another centre half identified.

At 12M they would actually be paying a premium given he’s in his last 18 months of contract.’

‘They’ve paid ‘buy-out’ clauses for their only two signings to date in this window. Every other target’s club is adding a nice fat Saudi tax to their players’ fees. Quite funny.

They’ll probably do their remaining signings on the 31st as clubs lower their demands. It’s going to be a busy and expensive day for the Geordies.’

‘The thing is does Dan Burn really want to join albeit, his boyhood heroes who are in a massive relegation scrap. 50/50 chance they will be a championship side next season and despite having unlimited funds world class players don’t want to be playing in the championship unless, of course it’s just for the money.’

‘He was a Newcastle fan as a kid and comes from the area – I’m sure he’d want to play for them and that could be a reason for him wanting to go.

He’d also double (minimum I would imagine) his money – what’s wrong with him wanting to increase his salary? – Nothing wrong with that being a reason to leave either.’

‘£8-£10m is a DERISORY offer for an experienced Premier League defender at a top 10 PL club, who is a regular and important part of our team, and still has a good 3-4 years in him. Its indicative of the chancers and amateurs pulling the strings at that clown college now.

Get to £15m and Bloom MIGHT come and sit at the table. Otherwise – don’t waste our time.’

‘Newcastle still need Burn far more than we need to sell him in this window!’

‘I hope Dan doesn’t go he has proved to be a superb defender.’

‘Well if Burn and his agent have any sense, they’ll wait and see who else Newcastle buy (if anyone) in the next few days, as without a good few extra in, even if BDB goes, theyre still going to be in trouble. They havent done enough yet and their scattergun buy anyone policy isnt working.

If I were BDB and willing in theory to move, I’d leave it till 31st.’

‘They obviously don’t like spending the cash on ‘temporary’ players, otherwise they’d be splashing the cash all over the place. Probably realise there’s a Saudi Tax on players they are enquiring about.

They have failed to realise that they don’t hold all the cards in this game and will have to pay what the seller wants unlike their petro game where they hold a lot of the cards and f.ck us over with fuel prices.’

‘Maybe we need to reassess who Dan Burn is – one of the very best around right now…?’

‘I wonder if Newcastle are in talks with Deportivo W.nka, because there can’t be too many clubs left who haven’t been contacted by those Geordie desperados.’

‘There’s something strange about Newcastle’s financial position. We keep hearing how they’re the richest club in the world and have all these funds at their disposal and yet, they’ve not landed Lingard as they wouldn’t meet United’s financial demands – from what I can gather, they’re about £5m short. They’re not going to get Carlos as they wouldn’t meet Seville’s demands – about £3m short and they’re falling about £5m short of BDB’s valuation. A side that’s quibbling over a few million quid doesn’t strike me as one that has ‘unlimited’ funds.’

‘Maybe they are worried about FFP rules and not having as much to spend in the Summer if they overspend now?’

‘FFP is done over a 3 year rolling period.

A legacy of Mike Ashley running the club at a small profit most years is that they have a huge scope for spending.’

‘Small profit and 12th (ish) every season – what a c.nt.’

‘TBF £15M might be acceptable from another club.

But as it is Saudi financed, it should be at least £20M.’

‘Don’t worry, the price will go up as the end of the window approaches…they are getting desperate, none of their targets seem to be sticking.’

‘If Dan, himself, is to consider going to Newcastle, then I dare say he would weigh up the situation and sensibly consider all the reasons for going and that would include dosh and a possible desire to play for the club of his boyhood dreams.’

‘All this club of his boyhood dreams, dream of playing for his hometown club – I don’t know if most players think like that, I think from early teens they’re on a career path to professional football and being a fan goes out of the window. If BDB makes a move I suspect it will be because it suits his family, is a good offer, and suits his career. I think the romance of hometown supported club is just for the romantics to be honest.’
