The Buffalo Bills made yet another fairly obvious decision Wednesday night in their effort to get under the salary cap, releasing veteran offensive guard Jon Feliciano.
The first domino fell on Tuesday when linebacker A.J. Klein was cut to free up $5.1 million, and Feliciano’s departure creates $3.4 million.
According to sports contract website Spotrac.com, these moves got the Bills approximately $2.5 under the cap, but of course, Feliciano and Klein are only the start of the plan general manager Brandon Beane must implement to open up money to re-sign some of the Bills own free agents, or anyone from outside the organization.
Thursday morning, the team used a portion of the savings to re-sign wide receiver/special teamer Jake Kumerow to a one-year deal, the monetary value of which is unknown.
Kumerow played 264 special teams snaps in 2021 and made five tackles. On offense, he with five tackles in the regular season. On offense, he has just three catches for 50 yards and a touchdown since he came to the Bills in 2020.
Feliciano originally joined the Bills as a free agent in 2019 on a two-year, $7.25 million deal after playing his first four seasons with the Raiders. He started all 16 games in 2019 and became one of the team leaders in the process.
In 2020 he missed the first seven games due to a torn pectoral muscle, an injury he suffered working out on his own just before the start of training camp. He returned and regained his starting spot at right guard and also played snaps at left guard and center.
But in 2021, Feliciano missed eight games because of injury or COVID-19, and by the end of the year he had lost a starting spot.
From when he suffered a calf injury on Halloween against Miami, Feliciano played only 17 more offensive snaps the rest of the year. Coach Sean McDermott stuck with Ike Boettger at left guard. When Boettger was lost for the season against Tampa Bay, seemingly opening a starting spot for Feliciano, the team turned to Ryan Bates instead.
Assuming the Bills can retain Bates as a restricted free agent, he projects as the starter at left guard on a line that will also include left tackle Dion Dawkins, center Mitch Morse, right tackle Spencer Brown and, providing he doesn’t also get caught in the salary cap purge, Daryl Williams at right guard.
The 30-year-old Feliciano may seek to join Brian Daboll and the Giants. Daboll took with him to New York Feliciano’s long-time offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. Feliciano played three years in Oakland when Johnson was the tight ends coach there, and three years in Buffalo with Johnson coaching the line.
► In another piece of player news, former Bills defensive lineman Shaq Lawson made a plea via Twitter on Wednesday to rejoin the Bills.
A 2016 first-round pick of the Bills, Lawson left via free agency before 2020 and has been on a whirlwind ever since. He signed with the Dolphins, was traded after one season to the Texans, and before ever playing a game there was traded to the Jets.
Last season, New York cut Lawson the day before it was playing the Bills in the 2021 season finale. Because he wasn’t under contract at the end of the year, he is eligible to be signed as a free agent before the official signing period begins Wednesday.
