California Lawmakers Propose $400 Gas Rebate For All Taxpayers, Including Those Who Don’t Have A Car

With gas being at the forefront of everyone’s minds, it looks like California is trying to give a bit of relief to taxpayers in the form of a gas rebate.

According to FOX 11 LA, the Democrats have proposed a $400 gas card for every California resident taxpayer, including people who don’t have a car.

“This proposed $400 rebate would cover the current 51 cents-per-gallon gas tax for one full year, 52 trips to the pump for most vehicles,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) and Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins (D-San Diego).

“Notably, we believe a rebate is a better approach than suspending the gas tax — which would severely impact funding for important transportation projects and offers no guarantee that oil companies would pass on the savings to consumers,” said the letter, LA Times reports.

According to CNBC, Lyft announced its decision this week, stating that the fees will go to drivers who are left with spending extra while filling their gas tanks as gas prices continue to skyrocket. They did not provide details on the increased amount expected to be added to rides.

KTLA reports that senior communications manager CJ Macklin said, “Driver earnings overall remain elevated compared to last year, but given the rapid rise in gas prices we’ll be asking riders to pay a temporary fuel surcharge, all of which will go to drivers.”

The U.S. has banned the imports of Russian oil and gas, as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Roomies, what do you think about this?
