Canada’s Rachel Homan and John Morris missed the playoffs in mixed doubles curling at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games after losing 8-7 to Italy in an extra end Monday morning.
Canada held the hammer and had to draw to the button to secure the victory and, more importantly, a spot in the semifinals. Homan’s shot slid just a millimetre too deep and an official awarded Italy the stolen winning point after a measurement.
Homan and Morris finished with a 5-4 record and tied with Sweden in fourth place in the table. Without any tiebreaker games, Almida de Val and Oskar Eriksson advanced based Sweden’s 6-2 victory over Canada earlier in the week.
Morris captured the gold medal with Kaitlyn Lawes four years ago when mixed doubles curling made its debut at the Pyeongchang Winter Games.
Italy’s Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner had already secured the No. 1 seed and kept their unblemished record intact finishing the round-robin with a 9-0 record.
Elsewhere in the round-robin finale, Norway edged Switzerland 6-5, Great Britain doubled up on the United States 8-4 and the Czech Republic stole two points in the eighth end to edge China 8-6.
Norway and Great Britain both finished at 6-3 and will meet in the semifinals while Italy faces Sweden (Monday, 7:05 a.m. ET).
