At the beginning of each year, car owners in Romania make calculations in order to pay the car tax. The same is true at the beginning of 2022 when, in theory, all owners of a car registered or registered in our country will have to pay this tax, in accordance with the legislation in force.
I said ” theoretically ”because there are several categories of lucky people. They are exempt from paying the annual car tax. In the following we will tell you what these categories are and under what conditions those persons will benefit from the exemption from paying the tax for the year 2022.
Who does not pay the car tax?
Several types of motor vehicles are exempt from paying car tax. Thus, the owners of historic vehicles and those who own electric vehicles are only two of the categories of persons who are not obliged to pay the car tax.
In accordance with the provisions of art. 469 of Law no. 227/2015 on the Fiscal Code with subsequent amendments and completions, the categories of vehicles for which the owners are exempted from paying the annual tax are the following:
- motor vehicles owned by persons with disabilities or used to transport persons with disabilities;
- motor vehicles owned by war veterans or their widows;
- historic vehicles;
- electric vehicles ;
- vehicles used for transporting hives
- motor vehicles used for emergency response;
- vehicles belonging to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports;
- second-hand vehicles, registered as a stock of goods, which are not used in the self-interest of the owner
- motor vehicles owned by national minority citizens’ organizations;
- motor vehicles belonging to foundations established by will in order to support humanitarian, social and cultural actions;
- motor vehicles owned by companies, which are used for public or extra-urban public transport.
To be exempt from payment of car tax these people will have to apply for an exemption. It shall be accompanied by supporting documents proving that the owner is in one of the above cases of exemption. . Taxpayers with a declared disability will be exempted from the month following the submission of the documents.
