Michoacán es el estado líder productor de aguacate de exportación, por encima de Jalisco, el Estado de México, Nayarit y Morelos, que concentran la producción nacional. El Gobierno de Estados Unidos, principal receptor de las importaciones, anunció el 12 de febrero de 2022 una suspensión de las compras ante una amenaza telefónica recibida por uno de sus inspectores en Michoacán.

México exportó aguacates al mercado estadounidense por un valor de aduana de 2,778 millones de dólares en 2021 (7.6 millones de dólares diarios), lo que representó 91.6% del total de importaciones de ese producto desde Estados Unidos.
El Gobierno de Estados Unidos aplicó una suspensión de las importaciones de aguacate a ese país desde el sábado 12 de febrero, un día antes del Super Bowl 2022, cuando se consume más aguacate en todo el año, debido a la creciente popularidad del guacamole, uno de los platillos preferidos en ese evento.
