Catalyst thieves run away from these cars. What is the reason?

Catalytic converters or catalysts are parts that are installed in the exhaust system. They are responsible for cleaning up the gas emissions from burning fuel. These parts are made of precious metals such as palladium, rhodium and platinum, so the price of the catalytic converter can be high.

Why do thieves steal catalysts?

Rare minerals in the catalyst are sold quite expensively on the black market. Palladium used to filter harmful chemicals from the exhaust system is expensive, and its price continues to rise. The thief can easily remove them with an angle grinder. After cutting it, thieves can pull out the catalytic converter with a single jerk.

Catalyst thieves avoid these cars

Newer car models, such as Honda Accord and Jazz (production year 2015), have the catalytic converter installed inside the engine compartment, so that it is harder for thieves to steal it.

Carphrases.com mentions these brands as the most unattractive for thieves, because they have the least valuable catalysts: Ford, Chevy, Jeep, Dodge, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai and Chrysler.

At the same time, cars they do not have catalytic converters, so they are not at all attractive to thieves.

When do you need to change a catalyst?

The average lifespan of a catalytic converter is somewhere between 80,000 – 160,000 kilometers. These figures vary depending on how the car is maintained, but also on how it is driven. If the car runs longer in the city, it is likely that the particulate filter will charge much faster because the regeneration process cannot take place.

Regeneration burns the particles and empties the filter. To initiate a regeneration, the engine must reach a certain temperature. The regeneration of the particle filter is done automatically and lasts 10-20 minutes, during which time the machine must maintain a constant speed. The vehicle must be driven on motorways at speeds exceeding 60 km / h for at least 20 minutes.
