Rivers burst their banks, there were landslides and flooded roads – Italy was hit by sometimes violent storms at the start of the week.
On Tuesday afternoon a storm with heavy rain and hail swept through Catania in Sicily. There was also talk of injuries – but according to the Ansa news agency, nobody had to go to the hospital. Four arriving aircraft were diverted to other airports. The residents of the city on Etna were asked to stay in their homes. According to the information, there was damage to homes and businesses, trees were uprooted and roads were closed.
In the Liguria region, massive rains on Monday and Tuesday caused rivers to overflow. A small bridge collapsed, ten families had to be evacuated by the rescue workers, as reported by the Italian media.
In Savona on Monday it rained heavier than ever in the history of the coastal province, so that there were mudslides and floods. Road and train connections had to be interrupted.
