The government of Nicolás Maduro rejected this Friday the statements of the high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs , Josep Borrell, who considered that the report of the mission that will observe the November 21 elections will legitimize or delegitimize Maduro.

“Venezuela categorically rejects the statements that the EU Electoral Observation Mission aims to accompany the opposition and that what will ‘legitimize or delegitimize’ the electoral process will be the report” . This is stated in a government statement.

Borrell defended this Friday that the mission will accompany the opposition, because it is a greater guarantee for them that EU observers are present auditing the system.

«If the opposition decides to go and that is a path that allows opening a gap and achieving a greater institutionalization of the opposition, am I going to say that I do not command a mission because the elections are fraudulent? ». Borrell said so.

And he added: “Well, I encourage you to come forward if I already say they are fraudulent.”

In addition, he explained that, in his opinion, what will legitimize or delegitimize Maduro will be what the report prepared by the mission says. This is the first that the EU has sent to Venezuela in 15 years.

In this regard, the Chavista Executive considered that this statement reveals what it called” the interventionist claim ” .

“This is detrimental to what is established in the agreement signed between the CNE and the EU,” he indicated.

And he continued: «The EU seems to misunderstand its role within the framework of the Venezuelan political process. He misses the opportunity to position himself as a respectable, impartial and independent actor. It is positioned as a political piece subordinate to US foreign policy and to some sectors of the extreme right, which seek to undermine the Venezuelan electoral and democratic process. ”

“A mission with these characteristics will not be accepted”

In this sense, they emphasize that “Venezuela will not accept any interference” and that an Electoral Observation Mission “with the characteristics described by Mr. Borrell will not be accepted.”

“The legality and legitimacy of the Venezuelan electoral process does not depend, nor will it depend, on any foreign actor, but strictly on popular sovereignty,” he stressed.

They demanded that the EU representatives refrain from politically manipulating the Mission, and urged to maintain a strict conduct of impartiality, objectivity and independence and non-interference in the electoral process.
