Chiefs Rumors: Josh Gordon Promoted to 53-Man Roster, Will Play vs. Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs promoted veteran wide receiver Josh Gordon to their 53-man active roster on Tuesday, placing defensive end Joshua Kaindoh on injured reserve to clear a roster spot.

That move makes Gordon available to suit up Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills, with NFL Network’s Taylor Bisciotti reporting the wideout is expected to play.

The 30-year-old landed with Kansas City shortly after the NFL reinstated him from an indefinite suspension he received in December 2019.

Gordon appeared to reference his new status on the team:

All honor and glory to God.

The veteran pass-catcher will probably never again reach the heights he attained in 2013, when he led the NFL in receiving yards (1,646) despite missing two games.

But he showed with the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks he still can be effective in a limited role. During his 22 appearances with those two franchises, he caught 67 passes for 1,146 passing yards and four touchdowns.

The Chiefs don’t need much help on offense. They’re second in yards (427.5 per game) and tied for second in scoring average (33.5 points).

Kansas City isn’t much worse off if Gordon doesn’t work out. The Le’Veon Bell experiment was a bit of a bust and that didn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Should Gordon thrive, head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will have a different dimension to their passing game.

“He’s a big receiver,” Patrick Mahomes said of the 6’3″ Gordon. “Even if he’s covered, he’s not covered. You can kind of throw it up there and he can make plays.”

Fans apparently won’t have to wait long before seeing what the one-time All-Pro can do in the NFL’s most explosive aerial attack.
