A house church in the state of Chhattisgarh, in India , was attacked by a mob of racial Hindus during a service on 9 January. After the violent attack, five Christian families fled the village of Odagoan, fearing for their safety.
According to International Christian Concern (ICC) , an organization that monitors persecution around the world, the pastor and a member of the congregation were seriously injured and were hospitalized.
According to Pastor Hemanth Kandapan’s own account, the attack began when a Hindu radical named Sanjith Ng broke into the cult and began beating him and the faithful. Kandapan was dragged out of the house by the attacker, where a crowd of over 200 people had gathered.
Local sources stated that the crowd brutally beat the pastor and another Christian , called Sankar Salam. The attackers cursed them with obscene words and accused them of forcing the conversion of Hindus to Christianity.
The two Christians had serious internal injuries and had to be admitted to the hospital. The radicals also threatened to kill the rest of the congregation if they did not stop worshiping in the village of Odagoan.
“I was stuck at home for almost nine hours. All this time, I was hacked and harassed by the mob, even in the presence of the police,” Kandapan told ICC.
The next day, Hindu nationalist party leaders forced the village’s Christians to participate in a religious ceremony, where an evangelical woman was forced to convert to Hinduism.
Fearing threats from the radicals, five Christian families abandoned their homes, fled Odagoan and took shelter in nearby villages. “The situation in the village is still tense. We don’t know how long these families will have to stay away from their homes,” Pastor Kandapan said.
According to International Christian Concern, attacks on Christians and churches have become frequent in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Hate speeches , made by radical Hindu leaders, against the Christian community happen freely and without punishment from the authorities.
