Christian teenager Bruna Pontes, 15, received a certificate from Nasa for participating and standing out in a space agency asteroid search campaign. The girl, from Campos dos Goytacazes, in Rio de Janeiro, also had her name baptized on an asteroid, in her honor.
“I am very happy, but I consider it more important to show that everyone has the possibility to go further. It is not enough just to worry about the tests, we have more ways to go”, said the student, in an interview with G1.
The award took place in 2019, but only now was it published by the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) and WGSBN Bulletin, publication of the International Astronomical Union (IUA).
At age 13, Bruna was one of the public school students to be nominated to participate in a
astronomy, in partnership with Clube de Astronomia de Campos. As part of the project, she was part of NASA’s International Asteroid Search Campaign.
For a month, the student spent three hours a day watching images of the universe. Bruna excelled in the discoveries and observations of asteroids and was decorated. The asteroid 2013 EG44 was named “Brunapontes”, in honor of the girl, who became one of the youngest people to have her name baptized on a celestial body.
With her name in the stars, Bruna now has big plans for the future. The Christian teenager, who is a fan of science and geography, intends to pursue a career as an astronomer. Soon, she will start her scholarship in the Young Astros of Tomorrow project, which has funding from the US Consulate in Rio de Janeiro.
According to Bruna, who joins the Campos Adventist Church, she did not imagine that participating in the astronomical project would take her this far. “It was an extraordinary joy, I never imagined that one day this would happen to me. I don’t even have the words to express it,” he told Adventist News.
