Gonzaga rolled St. Mary’s when they faced the Gaels at home but it was a much different story on Saturday with a huge upset that shook college basketball.

Saturday was truly insane throughout college basketball. Before the No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs even took the floor on the road against the St. Mary’s Gaels, six teams ranked inside the top 10 had already lost on the day. And even though the Bulldogs beat their WCC rivals by almost 20 the last time they faced them, it was a different story on the Gaels’ home floor on senior night.

St. Mary’s came out scorching on both ends of the floor, taking it right at the vaunted Zags bigs in Chet Holmgren and Drew Timme throughout the night and scoring. More importantly, their physical defense took Gonzaga completely out of their rhythm and seemingly befuddled the Bulldogs.

Every time that the Zags tried to mount a comeback, the Gaels had an answer. And finally, the Bulldogs had no bullets left in the chamber and St. Mary’s pulled off a massive 67-57 upset that handed Mark Few’s team their first conference loss of the season and their third of the year overall.

Gonzaga upset by St. Mary’s: College basketball media reactions

After the monster win for the Gaels (and the ensuing court-storming from a hyped-up crowd on Senior Night), the college basketball media world couldn’t believe what a crazy nightcap this was to an even crazier day.

7 ranked teams lost today… all 7 on the road… and all 7 were ranked in the top ten! CHAOS!

Look, St Mary’s has this game wrapped up, but what did these refs just do these last two possessions!?! MONSTER bailouts. Horrible calls against Gonzaga

Last time I remember being this flummoxed by a Gonzaga game?

Down goes Gonzaga. Randy Bennett is one of the most underrated coaches in the country.

(No, I can’t see him at Maryland. He’s been on the West Coast his whole career). pic.twitter.com/dvlWvmCGhQ

as someone who has watched a good number of Gonzaga-Saint Mary’s games, this isn’t remotely surprising

those dudes recruit all over the world to get a chance to win this one

— Justin Ferguson (@JFergusonAU) February 27, 2022

Every player on St. Mary’s will likely “go pro in something other than sports” and yet they have been impressive tonight, leading No. 1 Gonzaga from start to finish.

— Lee K. Howard (@HowardWKYT) February 27, 2022

No. 1 Gonzaga: lost.

No. 2 Arizona: lost.

No. 3 Auburn: lost.

No. 4 Purdue: lost.

No. 5 Kansas: lost.

No. 6 Kentucky: lost.

No. 9 Texas Tech: lost.

Historic, unprecedented day of destruction in college basketball.

I don’t care what the calendar says. March is here.

— Matt Norlander (@MattNorlander) February 27, 2022

Per ESPN broadcast, with No. 1 Gonzaga now going down, this is the first day in college basketball history where seven top-10 teams have lost.

— Nathan King (@NathanKing247) February 27, 2022

At the end of the day, you can’t expect any team — even one playing in the West Coast Conference — to be perfect every time out.

With that said, it was jarring to see this type of game from Gonzaga. Timme looked awful, Holmgren wasn’t able to assert himself, and there wasn’t much coming from the guards with consistency either.

March Madness is just around the corner and the Zags are going to have a target on their backs. We’ll have to see if Mark Few can build off of a loss like this to make sure something similar in nature doesn’t get them bounced prematurely from the NCAA Tournament.
